Does the Constitution protect Americans, or does it just get in the way?

The Constitution was not written because the colonies wanted a powerful central government. In fact, many Americans had just fought a war against concentrated political power. Instead, it was written because the existing government under the Articles of Confederation was too weak to govern effectively. The Constitution was an attempt to strike a balance: a government strong enough to function, but constrained enough to protect individual liberty.

Protects Americans and helps the government to run smoothly.

It just gets in the way of things, and I think we should get rid of it.

it protects Americans , however it was written 250 years ago and some of the things in it are having unintended consequences in todays world. However , the founders included a way to create amendments to keep the Constitution current.

A bit of both. As with all things, it’s open to interpretation.


For example, there has been much talk about the Supremacy Clause as of late. This clause was meant to give the federal government the power to definitively settle disputes between states. Today it is too often interpreted that it gives the federal government authority to wholly override state authority. We the people have allowed that interpretation too often and for too long. Nobody likes to give up power. So any attempt to push back against this interpretation will likely be seen as insurrection and met with severe force. In this way, the Constitution gets in our way. But removing the clause puts “too much” responsibility on the states to function essentially as sovereign countries. As you pointed out, that didn’t even work centuries ago. Now that we have interstate power grids and almost innumerable interstate communications and transportation systems for a myriad of reasons and resulting in the flow of revenues into and out of every state hundreds of thousands of times a day, repealing the Supremacy Clause would literally cripple our economy overnight.
So what do we do? We really only have two options. We can say, “Eh… it’s good enough” and sit back and enjoy being a citizen in one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, or we can start a revolution. Because there is no voting our way out of the situation we are currently in. It’s not an accident that most people, especially men, have been groomed to be soft and compromising. What are we actually going to do? Ell oh ell!

Barring a few exceptions like Clarence Thomas and especially Thomas, they don't care. What's worse is that they are the ones who should care the most. Alas, they have stabbed us in the back yet again.
