I've never considered myself a grammar Nazi, for all I know I could be completely wrong, but it irritates me so much when I see people using the word 'addicting'. In my mind, 'addictive' is the proper use of the word.
And so many other words are completely used wrong lately! Example: using 'loose' instead of 'lose'!

Depends upon the context. Addictive suggests that a substance causes dependency. Addicting suggests an action or behavior that leads to dependency. Cocaine is addictive while gambling is addicting.
To apply your reference to social media. Social media is addictive. Using social media is addicting.
For the record, things like gambling and compulsive eating are addicting because of the rush of endorphins we experience as a result. Which is similar but not equivalent to the chemical dependency of addictions to heroin, nicotine and the like.
