What is it with people saying they are alone if they don't have a romantic partner as if friends and family don't exist?

This sounds like being bitter about not having a relationship and wanting to justify it with similar people that are lonely, no offense.

Us happily single people don't think the way that you imply, and I know many that choose to be single for various reasons.
