Because the USA is currently under a far right government and such actions are the norm in times like this. Extremists feel secure and justified and want to show they're the ones in charge.

The problem with Kirk and his erks is they're against the existence of people not ideas. In that sense they are as dangerous as people like Hitler, perhaps more, because they change the mindset of people to enable genocide.
