A lot of men in the 1960s, during the time of the Vietnam War, refused to be drafted or, if they were drafted, refused to go to war because they felt the war was unjust. Many of them went to Canada or went to prison or got complicated. There was no deference from the draft. College students got specific deferments from their draft as long as they maintained a C average and took a certain number of college units on an ongoing basis. This was probably responsible for the extended education that many young men got during this period of time.

The individual who constantly keeps making member posts about me mentioned that, no, there was not really a draft; there was a lottery. That is really stupid. There was a mandatory draft for a very long time, during which men who turned 18 were simply told to report to the Selective Service Office or to the medical clinic used by the Selective Service. If they passed the medical, they were inducted into the service. That was it. Then, because of the uproar, there was a brief lottery.
