Why do so many people in Japan eat alone at restaurants?

I notice a lot of single person’s seat at the restaurant. Are they that lonely?

Eating alone is practical and fast. it doesn't mean you're lonely. Why are people who seem dependent on others for their social lives often seen as more social or somehow more successful?
