Which political movement is the bigger threat to America: MAGA or DSA?

I’ve seen a lot of people argue that MAGA represents the greater threat to America, while I am considerably more concerned about the Democratic Socialists of America and the political system they ultimately want to build.

American politics is increasingly framed as a fight between two supposed extremes. Critics of MAGA regularly describe it as fascist, while Trump and other Republicans accuse the socialist left of communism or communist ideology.

I don’t think either label should replace looking at what the movements actually advocate.

I support MAGA and voted for President Trump. I reject the claim that supporting his agenda means America is inevitably becoming fascist.

My concern about the DSA comes from its own published objectives. The organization advocates replacing capitalism with democratic socialism, drafting a new constitution, and establishing a democratic socialist republic. Democratic socialism and communism are not identical ideologies, but the DSA is explicitly anti-capitalist and seeks a fundamentally different political and economic system from the one America has today.

So while political rhetoric increasingly makes the conflict sound like “fascism vs. communism/socialism,” I’m interested in comparing the actual movements.

Which worries you more about gaining greater power and influence over the United States: MAGA or the DSA—and why?

Allowing 40 million illegal aliens into America 🇺🇸 and treating them better than our American Veteran's and American citizens as well. Kicking our veterans out of the motels and hotels that we provided by the Veterans Administration and giving the illegal aliens the room and board and food, cellphone, free medical coverage and depleting social security when they didn't have any rights whatsoever to receive Social Security benefits!

And the poor VET that was being provided for ended up literally sleeping on the sidewalks, no food and homeless.

Whatever people may not like about the Republicans, they would never treat our VETERANS that way.

A government regulating businesses, subsidizing industries, directing investment, or even owning particular enterprises does not by itself transform the United States into a socialist economy.

Could a socialist movement later use expanded government economic power as a vehicle for further nationalization or social ownership? Sure. That is a separate argument.

But the DSA itself does not describe its goal as merely “more state capitalism.” It explicitly says capitalism should be replaced with democratic socialism, and historically it has distinguished socialist social ownership from simply having a capitalist economy with more government involvement.

So explain the mechanism. What exactly about MAGA’s economic policies supposedly moves ownership and control of the economy toward the DSA’s democratic-socialist model?

Just saying “state capitalism leads toward socialism” doesn’t demonstrate that.

It generally describes substantial state direction or ownership operating alongside markets and private firms. Even critics of Trump’s recent government equity stakes describe them as “state corporatism” or state capitalism—not as transferring the economy to worker/social ownership.

China also doesn’t prove the terms are interchangeable. China itself officially calls its system a “socialist market economy” in which public ownership remains central while private enterprise and markets also operate. So the question remains: what specifically about Trump’s policies moves the United States toward the DSA’s goal of replacing capitalism with democratic-socialist social ownership? Saying “China uses state capitalism, therefore state capitalism is socialism” skips the mechanism you were asked to explain.

State Capitalism is not capitalism. It's government taking stakes in corporations creating unfair competition where they can choose winners and losers. Why should chip makers like Nvidia and AMD, who the government hasn't invested in, have pay tribute to the government for the privilege to export their chips and Intel doesn't? Increasing government intervention under the guise of protectionism through taxes/tariffs, subsidies, regulations, price controls and bailouts distorts the economy. These are not the ideals of free market capitalism and draw the US further away from the laissez faire economy that real conservatives support. Good companies should be allowed to thrive without government competition and poorly run companies should be left to die on the vine and not benefit from Trump's sovereign wealth fund. US capitalism will never be the same because no one is standing up to this type of market manipulation and it can only get worse under a Democrat

@BonzoInBitburg, now you’re making a different argument—and a more defensible one. You can absolutely argue that Trump’s tariffs, subsidies, export conditions, and the government’s Intel stake depart from laissez-faire capitalism and distort markets. The Intel stake is real, and NVIDIA and AMD have disclosed that U. S. officials expected roughly 15% of revenue from certain licensed China chip sales.

But that still doesn’t establish your original claim that Trump is moving America toward socialism. Government intervention is not automatically socialism. The DSA is talking about something substantially different: ending capitalism, establishing public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries, and ultimately building a democratic-socialist economy. So we can debate whether Trump is too interventionist for a free-market conservative—I may disagree with some of those policies myself—but “not laissez-faire enough” and “moving toward the DSA’s socialism” are not the same argument.

The DSA’s agenda is not simply “tax rich people more.” It explicitly seeks to move beyond capitalism and fundamentally restructure American government, including abolishing the Senate and Electoral College and replacing major parts of the existing constitutional system.

Those changes would affect everyone, regardless of income. You don’t have to be wealthy to care about private property, economic freedom, representative government, checks and balances, or what kind of constitutional system your country has.

You may think those changes would be beneficial. I strongly disagree. But dismissing socialism as something only rich people have reason to worry about completely sidesteps what the DSA actually proposes.

Yes, there have been fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers, and any potentially unlawful killing should be independently investigated and prosecuted if the evidence establishes criminal wrongdoing. But individual shootings—especially cases where the facts are disputed—do not automatically prove that an entire political movement supports fascism.

As for Paul Weyrich, I watched what you linked. His 1980 statement about wanting fewer people to vote is objectionable, and I don’t defend it. But a statement by one conservative activist nearly half a century ago does not establish MAGA’s present-day platform.

Some of its proposals have influenced or overlapped with Trump administration policy, but that still makes it categorically different from citing the DSA’s own official program.

Even if you personally want to compare Project 2025 with the DSA program, that is a separate comparison—and I would still choose Project 2025 over the DSA agenda. But first establish what MAGA itself officially advocates, because that was the question I actually asked.

Whether Trump has lied, exaggerated, or failed to fulfill campaign promises does not determine whether Project 2025 was the official Republican platform. That is a question of authorship and adoption, not whether I trust Trump personally.

The RNC adopted and published its own 2024 platform, explicitly calling it the “2024 GOP Platform to Make America Great Again.” Project 2025 was separately produced by the Heritage Foundation and a coalition of conservative organizations as recommendations for a future conservative president. Heritage itself described it as a policy guide intended to influence presidential candidates.

That does not mean Project 2025 was irrelevant to Trump. There was substantial policy overlap, and people connected with the project later entered his administration. But “influential conservative blueprint” and “official MAGA/Republican platform” are still not synonymous. Even Heritage describes its Mandate series as recommendations from which political leaders can pick and choose.

As for your second video: yes, I know the 2016 “Fifth Avenue” remark. CNN itself describes Trump as jokingly saying he could shoot somebody without losing voters. I don’t particularly like the remark, but it was obviously a boast about the loyalty of his supporters—not a policy proposal to murder people or abolish constitutional government.

So no, I am not going to “denounce” Trump as a fascist over an obnoxious joke from 2016.

And none of this answers the question I originally asked. I gave you the DSA’s current, official program calling for major changes to America’s constitutional and economic system. You responded with Trump campaign promises, an old joke, Paul Weyrich from 1980, and allegations about individual shootings.

If MAGA officially advocates replacing America’s constitutional system in a comparable way, show me the actual adopted program and quote the proposal. Otherwise, you are still arguing around the comparison instead of answering it.

But none of what you listed amounts to replacing the constitutional system the way the DSA explicitly proposes.

Reclassifying some federal employees, eliminating an executive department, reducing regulatory agencies, using tariffs, or arguing for stronger presidential control over the executive branch are major policy choices, and you can oppose them. But they still operate within the existing Constitution and separation of powers. The current Schedule Policy/Career order, for example, covers about 8,000 policy-influencing positions and explicitly says appointments remain merit-based rather than partisan.

The Republican platform likewise proposes things such as abolishing the Department of Education, cutting regulations, tariffs, and restructuring the federal bureaucracy. Those are changes to government policy and administration, not a proposal to abolish Congress, replace the Constitution, or create a new political system.

The DSA, by contrast, explicitly says: replace the two-party system with multiparty democracy, expand the House, institute proportional representation and ranked-choice voting, and abolish the Senate.

You are openly defending abolition of the Senate, removal of the independent presidency, and replacement of an independent Supreme Court with a judiciary accountable to Congress because those institutions currently obstruct policies you favor. That is not merely ordinary reform for the middle class. It is a sweeping concentration of national power in whichever congressional majority happens to prevail.

The Senate was designed to represent states as states, not simply duplicate the House according to population. The judiciary is independent precisely so constitutional rights do not depend entirely on the preferences of Congress. And the presidency provides a separate democratic mandate and a check on legislative power. Eliminating all three restraints because they sometimes block progressive legislation would make government faster—but not necessarily freer, fairer, or safer.

You assume the resulting majority would enact policies you support. But constitutional safeguards must also be judged by what happens when your political opponents gain control. A Congress powerful enough to subordinate the courts and dominate the executive could just as easily dismantle abortion protections, labor laws, voting rules, or any other policy you value.

MAGA wants to repeal the Repeal the 17th Amendment. The Original 1787 Intent: The original Constitution explicitly designed the House to represent the people, and the Senate to represent the state governments. Proponents argue the 17th Amendment accidentally destroyed federalism by leaving state governments with no official voice or veto power in Washington. and this circles right back to Paul Weyrich's speech.

Repealing the Seventeenth Amendment would not abolish the Senate or eliminate state representation. It would restore the original constitutional method under which state legislatures selected senators. I may or may not support that proposal, but it is plainly not equivalent to destroying one chamber of Congress.

Some conservatives and Republican lawmakers do support repeal of the Seventeenth Amendment, but that does not establish that “MAGA” as a whole has adopted it, nor does it answer the comparison I asked for. The DSA’s published agenda seeks to remove the Senate as an institution. Repealing the Seventeenth Amendment would preserve the Senate while changing how its members are chosen.
