Is the rise of the stay-at-home boyfriend a crisis or a long overdue shift?

This isn't an opinion this is backed up by labor statistics and makes sense when you look at the jobs that are being eliminated and the ones that are being added. It's a world better suited for the woman worker. Are men going to have to start learning new skills?

As of early 2026, women hold more payroll jobs than men in the United States for the first time outside of a recession, and Federal Reserve economists say this time the shift is permanent. Over the past two years, men lost a net 142,000 jobs while women gained 298,000. The stay-at-home boyfriend is no longer just a TikTok joke.

The jobs growing fastest, healthcare, education, and social services, are over 78% female. Male-dominated sectors like manufacturing and tech are shrinking. Younger men are less likely to be working than their fathers were at the same age.
