The media has often pushed false narratives, or at times made up stories.
Where does this all come from? Why is it so prevalent today?

This whole "fake news" thing seems to be mostly an American thing. You don't hear it that much over here except from a few populist parties. Conspiracy theories are also a lot more widespread in the US, I wonder if they're related.
Also it's interesting that a lot of the people screaming fake news the loudest are also the ones supporting some of the biggest liars in politics or blindly trust random social media posts who refuse to provide any sources.
Also I don't like the whole fake news thing in general, people throw that way too easily as soon as they hear something they don't like or agree with. I actually do believe that all of the very big mainstream media, doesn't matter from which political spectrum, tells very little actual fake news BUT some try to push their agenda and interpret certain events differently or report on some stuff more prominently. But then people complain and go to some shitty social media site with 0 journalistic standards making shit up instead and think that's better 🤷♀️

I'd argue the best description is "entertainment news" or something along that line.
There are dozens of examples of falsified stories, or cover ups, or biased reporting etc.
It's difficult to work through the nonsense.

One of the most dangerous ones was the reporting of covid by CNN. There is a long list of nonsense they pushed. Even Fauci is currently being Investigated and he was considered a hero of the people largely due to CNN reports
There's also the ivermectin story where CNN knowingly lied about the drug and attacked Rogan.
Ironically, Gupta, the CNN guy admitted on Joe Rogan they made it up.

It's stuff like this that destroys trust.
Same thing that ruins everything, greed. Media is a for-profit industry and every US corporation’s business model is based on infinite profit growth. They will say and do anything and everything that they have to in order to keep profits going up.
They also don’t care if you don’t trust them, as long as you watch, and everyone does.
Six corporations own almost everything you read, watch and hear in the US, and contrary to popular myth, they are buying up the growing “independent” market too. This means you have to choose between the fake news perpetuated by the mainstream media or your next door neighbor’s teenager operating a vlog out of their basement. Making it very easy for “them” to accuse you of “conspiracy theories” when you don’t buy what they’re selling.
You have probably also noticed the increase in people arguing “Oh, you’re one of those ‘I do my own research’ guys!”. Being willing to check facts used to be a good thing. Now it means you’re paranoid. Ell oh ell!
We’re going to hell in a hand basket, and nobody cares as long as they get to be behind the wheel.
The alleged "fake news" - such as the newspapers of record like the NY Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal - wasn't fake at all but was called out as being fake by the real fake news, such as Fox News, Info Wars, etc.
That said, there is bias in the media at times and that primarily comes from how information is presented, not what the factual information is.

I don't think there was propaganda involved.
That said - an you will learn this as you get older - people do mispeak or present unintentional messaging by the way they communicate that can lead the audience to misinterpret or jump to conclusions that they shouldn't have.
For instance, suppose I reported for MyNewsNetwork this:
John Smith killed Tom McVay yesterday.
No criminal charges were issued.
Now, you, as my audience, might think that the government of where this killing occurred is liberal and soft on crime. You MAY be right. But you might not be because, unfortunately, I, as a reporter, did not give sufficient context.
For instance, perhaps I should have more fully reported:
John Smith killed Tom McVay in Smith's home yesterday.
No criminal charges were issued against Smith who was defending his home. Authorities investigating McVay's home discovered a note in which McVay was attempting to commit a double-murder suicide desiring to kill Smith and his wife and then turn the gun on himself.
Or, perhaps I should have more fully reported:
John Smith shot and killed Tom McVay yesterday in the state of East Arizona.
McVay, the wanted terrorist responsible for the New Mexico City bombing in 2027, had been hiding in East Arizona and planning to commit more attacks.
Smith, who lived near the home where McVay had been living, recognized and confronted McVay and began to call authorities when McVay then attacked Smith. Smith, who had concealed carry license, then shot McVay in self-defense. No charges were filed against Smith.

So, you need to be aware that, often, people are not trying to deceive you, but the way in which they present information may come across as hypocrisy (or propaganda) or worse. That does not mean that there is not deliberate deception at times. But, we all need to do our due diligence and relying on Joe Rogan or some other talking head to do it for us is not good.
u I think that it really started when news became less about reporting the facts and more about entertainment and keeping eyes glued to the screen. You'll notice that local news generally leads with crimes because that gets people hooked.
Fox is also notorious for labeling themselves as fair and balanced, but when they were sued, admitted they were not a news source, but rather an entertainment source.
Now a lot of stations are owned by the same right wing corporations/people. They are being told what to report and people who leave or get terminated from those stations basically say the same thing. It's a concentrated effort to misinform the public so that they either completely lose faith in news sources or buy in HARD.
Either way, it's permeated into left wing media too as a way to push the agenda they want as well.
Interesting that you claim most media is right wing, but also anti Trump. Fox News is about the only major news source that holds a positive opinion.

Well, not sure if you consider them major, but OANN and Newsmax are also heavily pro Trump. CNN is trying to dip their toe into the water of being "fair" by giving right wing pundits airtime.
And this administration should be called out by media for what his FCC chair is trying to do to different stations. Also, Trump demanding firings, and in some cases getting it, to appease him for his administrations approval for planned mergers they have. Every station should abhor that kind of behavior as they could be next.

Remember also, you acknowledge Maher is a liberal (he obviously is). However, he recently told Vance his vote was in play.
The issue is that the Democrat Party has gone further left for a decade or more now. Think of the Clinton and Sanders primary. He stood for things a typical liberal like Clinton couldn't agree with. Now, they are normal policies initiatives.
Bernie had a profound influence on the party, and many within congress began to adopt his views. He was very far left compared to most democrats of the day. Now, we have the DSA platforming the abolishing of the senate, presidency, and Supreme Court. With significant democrats like Newsom showing them support.
The issue is liberals have generally moved further left. Anything right of them (even liberals) are defined as conservstives.

20 years ago they fought against gay marriage. Now many prominent conservative voices in media are gay.
It's not an identity crisis until the right made it one as part of their culture war. They did it initially with race relations, women's rights, then the lesbian/gay community and now trans people. Right wing media and leaders have been parroting this idea that pronouns and trans women in sports are somehow the end of society as we know it.
As for the change in attitude about immigration why are the left wing not allowed to change their mind but the right are, supposedly about gays being in part of their party (when in reality they are using them as tokens. They want to still end my marriage so, no, the far right isn't gay friendly)
The right has been going further and further right for YEARS. Probably most noticeably with the tea party. Corporate democrats aren't really the left either. They are driven by financial gain, maintaining the status quo, and fundraising off losses to republicans so that they can get them next time.

Ideally in my perfect world we would have a blend of both parties. Full equal protections for lgbt and minorities, Healthcare for all, a well funded military that actually takes care of its veterans, funding education, better guards in place to avoid corruption in social programs and eliminating others that are just goverment waste, actually taxing the rich a fair amount (stop looking at the amount sent and actually look at the percentage of their income earned like we all have to. Stop giving them tax shelters) and protecting 2a rights while still putting in place common sense protections, and stop with all the big brother stuff. All the surveillance we are under and how our information is just being sold to the highest bidder is frightening.

Its not just conservatives who have a problem with trans women in women's sports. It's female athletes. It creates an extremely unfair advantage.
Take the WNBA. There have been a handful of dunks in its 30+ year history. It's extremely rare. I'm the men's game Its common. Take a biological male and throw him in the WNBA and it will destroy the league. The WNBA is already suffering with Caitlin Clark dominating the league and it's creating problems for jealous players.

They aren't "fringe figures" they are the same people writing the conservative playbook Project 2025 which has implemented a majority of what they wanted with this administration in place.
They are already testing the waters with other cases to send up to the Supreme Court to make an argument to end Obergefell.
As for the trans athletes debate, I can also point out situations where cis women have beaten trans women, famously Lia Thomas who was beaten by cis women in a swimming competition. Again, this wasn't an issue most people cared about until conservative leaders used it as a cover to their followers (and detractors) to keep them distracted to what they are really doing.

Im gonna need some clarification on some of these points before I comment.
1. The problem is there is no clean answer. Merit based was mostly only getting white males preferential jobs while DEI focused too hard the other way. The problem is, if you leave the decision of hiring on merit alone, people will have their biases come into play with no checks and balances. With DEI, it wasn't perfect but at least gave a shot to others. I wish there was a happy medium here.

1. Merit based practices were largely phased out decades ago with affirmative action. Take university hiring processes. Many Black's were thrown into Universities they didn't match with. Often times to offset this they lower standards (seen it plenty in my work). It doesn't work. You are correct in assuming merit based approaches don't create equal outcomes. However, that shouldn't be the standard. The argument here is often opportunity vs outcome
2. While working with children (I handled severe cases), there was a destructive policy of pushing kids through and cutting corners. We were told to cheat and cut corners. I had instructors require me to write in answers if students refused or didn't understand. The idea is show passing rates and move them on. It wasn't uncommon for teachers to have the majority failing. It seemed there was an agreement that they couldn't manage basics. I had students in 8th grade who couldn't do basic math, read, or even tell time. Yet, we can trust them to define their gender? It's grooming
3. I don't see the point of abortion outside of 1st trimester, except in case to save the mother. Many use abortion as a contraceptive

I think the sports issue and other women's spaces should impact you. In my mind, defending women in this case is feminism. It makes me feel my position is more on line with women's rights than yours.
I know little about your Louisiana example, but I want deny such cases exist.
1. Which is why I said there should be a happy medium. Somewhere where quotas aren't a thing but if companies aren't giving interviews or hiring women or minorities on a regular basis that they be investigated perhaps.
2. Ah, that makes a bit more sense. That's because schools are criminally underfunded as are teachers. Their income is based off performances. Texas for example is about to unleash a metric fuckton of standardized tests for students to take because it means more money for them. Fund schools better and you will attract better people and for God's sake, do away with most of those standardized tests. Thankfully he was never violent about it, but it made my life really difficult to be around him.
3. It's ok if you dont agree with abortions. If that's the case. Don't have one. Dont try to dictate with others do with their bodies. That's the simple message for conservatives that they dont seem to like. They want to push christofascism beliefs on everyone else.
Feminism is defending all women, including trans women. It's not selecting one over the other. If I did, I would be nothing more than a TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist).
Like i said, I don't know where I fully stand on the issue. I get the hesitation but at the same time understand that while biological males who are not on hormones typically perform better than women in athletics, that those who are trans and are on hormones for like 1-2 years lose some of those advantages.
As for things like height, hand size, and other physical features, we all come in different shapes and sizes. Hell, I am 5'10 myself. There are biological women in the WNBA and just out there IRL who are way taller than me too. Caitlyn Clark who you mentioned is one of them, she's 6 ft tall.

1. Why do we need to care who is hired? That's the problem here. Yes! In some cases we can see prejudice. However, if a field is 80% white male, is it automatically suspect?
2. The issue I see is the age it starts. Sex education and discussion is fine for teenagers, as long as it's carefully and correctly done. Targeting 9 to 12 ( the age I had). is questionable. My mother worked with elementary and stated it happened there. We would have 5th graders automatically being sexual or firm in their identity. That to me is destructive, after dealing with ED cases of students who seemed to already. be groomed. This also ignores the overt political indoctrination. Yes, occasionally a woman will win, I don't deny that. However, letting in a biological male (even if some lost advantages) completely derails nearly every sport.
Tennis is about as close as you can get. Even Serena William (possibly the best ever) admitted she'd only rank on the top 500 of men.
1. We don't know if it is suspect or not, but if those 80% males have better jobs or get paid more than their counterparts, then yes. We have a BIG problem with that.
2. I won't deny your experiences but I can't imagine it's one that doesn't happen on both sides. For example lgbtq student clubs being shut down or denied until the law becomes involved. As for the 5th graders knowing, I mean my brother was already playing doctor with the neighbor girl by then and that was back in the 80s. Now kids have internet access and can identify themselves way easier than we ever did. It's not an issue to teach that there are lgbtq people out there anymore than it is to teach lessons about heterosexual relationships, people, marriages, or stories. We can't keep walking on eggshells on this issue. Not saying we need to teach them how to be gay or trans, just that it exists if they have questions. These goverments both local and federal requiring pro lgbt flags be taken down are going WAY too far.
Like i said, i dont fully know where i come down on the issue. I see both side's points. Where they lose me is calling them men. It's just unmasked transphobia at that point.
Plus, like I said, they never call out trans men going to compete. Mostly because they treat biological women all the time in this world like children. I don't hear anyone saying anytning about keeping them out of sports though. You'd think they would since then it would be hitting/hurting a "woman", but hell, there are a number of athletes who do that anyway away from the sports arenas.

1. Yes, I'd agree if they are paid more for the same job with no justification, then it's a problem. To me, that's not the issue (or the cause of the "wage gap") its male and female differences. It's even cultural differences. To me, it's fine. There's no need to artificially change industries.
2. The issue isn't so much saying "gay people exist", it's groomers who attempt to mold the minds lf the malleable. At that age they are very susceptible. Let's say a 9 year old comes in talking about being trans, or gay, or overtly sexual. I had 10 year old students trying to make sexual advances on me. That's dangerous. Do they truly understand what they are doing? No. It's something they learned (and yes, from social media and parents too). It's very risky. Once they get in high school, I understand. However, having stories from my mother of little children being overtly sexual, watch videos of abuse (I saw that in life skills of all places) etc should not be encouraged.
Transmen (which apparently make up a slight majority of trans) are often not brought up, because they don't represent a threat
Transmen athletes would have no advantage on male sports (that comes to mind), and sharing spaces with men wouldn't out cis men under threat. If anything, the transmen would be.
1. Well, that was the problem with the way things worked on a "merit" system. If you were friends with the boss or met a specific criteria of gender and race, you were considered having more merit than someone who actually did hard work that went unappreciated. Where do you think the gender pay gap stemmed from?
2. Well now we are talking about 2 different things. Sexual abused children are not the same as teachers talking about lgbtq. If you legit had a problem with conversations about sexuality, then you'd want to ban straight teachers from talking about their marriages, or wearing wedding rings too as well as not mentioning anything about heterosexual couples in story time (like mommy and daddy kind of level).
Sexually abused children often do learn it to be sexual with adults as a learned behavior and survival trait. It's not happening though because of lgbtq conversations in school.

Transmen are on testosterone, maybe at levels higher than some biological men out there even. I should show you some of these lifters who sculpt their bodies after transition and look nothing like women. These are the ones who conservatives want in the women's restrooms. It makes no sense.

I also listened to (and i wish I had saved it) a demonstration of some sort where this guy was showing data about how our children's education level and test scores have dropped since technology was introduced into the classroom and sent home with them. There is WAY too much out there to view , everyone is reliant on it now for everything, and now I just realized im sounding like my parents when they were complaining about the stuff I was into when I was younger lmao

1. I agree. I don't think there is any regression.
2. That I agree with. The amount of bs and corruption I've seen in the schools disturbs me. It's in everything. Some great teachers kicked out. Bad teachers kept. The waste of money. We had a superintendent that used schools resources to service her children, while ignoring those with real needs. She made $250k a year, while we couldn't afford to print paper. Most schools had an overabundance of administrators. Lots of 1st years quitting. It was a mess.
Trust me, I agree. Its bad. Apparently kids getting into college not knowing how to write papers because they relied on ai. I'm not surprised.

Also, I forgot to say this earlier and I apologize, but thank you in your efforts to teach children. I truly appreciate those who dedicate their lives to teaching children (good stuff mind you lol)
It's funny cause every year my wife makes the same joke with every new teacher when she is first doing introductions. "Our children can be a handful at times, (One has adhd and the other is high functioning autistic) so anything you need, whether it be school supplies, missing schoolwork, whiskey or tequila... you name it and we will get it for you"

Thanks! I was forced to quit because I had a health crisis. Spent a long time dealing with that, coming home to caretake for grandparents, and aiding my mother. Became too much and I had a horrible collapse.
Not sure what I think of it. Sometimes I felt like I was harming children. School politics often got in the way. Standards were destructive. I don't know. I did see success. I know I helped some. Even had an award at the district.

Sorry to hear about the crisis. That sounds like a lot to deal with all at once. Heck, I have panic attacks and am agoraphobic and wouldn't wish those on anyone, but i didn't have to deal with the things you did. Needing to step back and take a breather is completely understandable.
Politics in any setting at work are annoying, but especially when it plays with the well being of children. I filly agree that set standards for every child IS destructive. We all learn in different ways and at different speeds. Failing kids who then just give up is heartbreaking but a reality we are forced with because of the greed of politicians and school leadership.
On that note, it's late so im gonna head to bed. It's been a fun debate and it remained civil the whole way out so that makes me happy.

Trust in the media in the US has been in the gutter pretty much ever since covid happened. It should have been longer, like within the past decade but better late than never I guess.
Echo chambers and bandwagon effect. Some people may think real life is boring and fake news makes it more interesting.
Fake news has an agenda to manipulate. Actual news does not. Fake news makes money and news does not.
Part of it is that they pander to a specific audience. The full story is often not reported.
