Why do coastal elites act like college degrees equal intelligence?

Coming from someone who was raised in fly over country, having a degree does not make you less ignorant it just makes you louder about the wrong things.
You do not know how to lay a proper bead with a welder. You do not know how to square a foundation tension a fence or keep a tractor running when the nearest parts store is forty miles of gravel away. You have never stood in a field at dawn calculating moisture soil and weather so that thousands of people including you actually eat next month. You call it unsophisticated. We call it keeping the lights on and the shelves stocked while you debate sustainability from a condo that could not grow a tomato if its life depended on it.

I live near a historic town in the western Sierra Nevada foothills.
At some point, well-off retirees from the San Francisco area started moving here. They had university degrees and bragged about reading the NYT every day as if that proved that they were smart.
They loved CNN, MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, Stephen Colbert and NPR but refused to consider any information that didn't come from those sources.
In other words, they were no more informed than a lazy person who watches TV all day. Yet, they thought they were superior and knew everything there is to know.

They were loyal Democrats who bought into every new woke issue that came along.
They supported trans-genderism and trans-women in women's athletics. They couldn't define the word woman. They wore preferred pronoun badges to show solidarity and virtue signal.

They claimed to understand the "black experience" even though it seemed like they had never met any black folk. They bought into the "white guilt" and "white fragility" narratives even though they lived in upscale homes in all white neighborhoods, in one of the whitest counties in California. Their posturing was virtue signaling.

They swallowed the covid narrative hook, line and sinker. They masked even when alone outdoors or in their cars, social distanced, and eagerly got jabbed. They ostracized anyone who didn't fall in line with the Branch Covidian cult.
Despite their educations, they didn't do any research at all.

So I agree with you, a lot of people with college degrees are uninformed and highly programmed. Their degrees seem to prevent them from thinking for themselves.
Woke Democrats are just dumb as uneducated, redneck hillbillies and have less common sense.

And, you are right, as far as knowing how to do anything practical, they are helpless. They call an expert - plumber, electrician, carpenter or mechanic - people they feel intellectually superior to.

It depends. Successful statistic students must be intelligent but yeh most college degrees are not about intelligence , it is about filling pages with words. Any words. Long winded. Yuck.

You make same mistake about people you talk about. I have no clue about US but in my country a guy who knows how to make a steel concrete foundation makes more than a doctor without specialization. Everything beyond that is just some kind of defense mechanism.

They look down on the people they pay to come fix things for them. Their college degree is just an expensive piece of paper they paid a lot of money for and it's a status symbol like their BMW and yacht.
