What do i do if i am ordered to evacuate and my car needs to be charged? My electric service could already be interrupted and there will be thousands of other cars trying to use the public charging stations (if they still have electric service.)


I would consider a hybrid but not as my primary vehicle.

I already do drive an electric car and I love it! The BYD Dolphin SUV goes for $30-35K Euro, gets about 375-425 miles on a charge, depending on weather. In my area, a full charge at home costs around $9 Euro ($10.35 USD). Compared to petrol for a gas car car in the EU, currently about $2- $2.29 Euro a liter, it's a no-brainer. The EU has the infrastructure to handle EV's. The US does not.

In the USA, if you had a gas vehicle that averaged 30 mpg, you'd need 13 gallons to go 390 miles. At $4 a gallon, that's $52 USD, or about $45 Euro. If you annualize that based on 15,000 miles, a gas car in the US costs $2,080 a year now. An electric car where I live currently costs $400. If you only use high-speed commercial charging stations, your cost would increase to anywhere from $800 - $1,200 annually, depending on your subscription. There are some companies that offer unlimited charging for cars and SUV's for $55 a month. If you travel a lot, that's a great deal.

It rides great, has all the fancy stuff standard. We've also driven Citroen, Renault and Opel electric vehicles. The only that sucked was the Opel.

@_jenny_ I have been driving an electric car (Tesla-Model S) for more than 10 years and will not drive anything else at this point. I don't' want to go back to that 150-year-old technology (Internal Combustion Engine) crap and all of the built-in failure stuff that goes with it. (i. e. radiator cooling system, water pump, fuel pump, 1000-pound transmission, 500-pound differential, drive shaft, axel shafts, )

Now driving a 2026, Model S Plaid, that is FSD - Full Self Driving-Supervised. Drove to Las Vegas round trip on FSD without a hiccup. I can charge at hope if I wish, or drive two blocks to a Super Charger.

Need I say more, about would I drive an electric car? The nay sayers, just do not know what they are talking about. Been there, now there, and won't go elsewhere.

@_jenny_ You cannot sleep or be inattentive while driving under FSD or the system shuts down and the car drives to a quiet place and stops and must drive yourself.

@_jenny_ Watch the road, pay attention to what the car is doing, or what the GPS is telling the car to do or where to go. No system is "Fail Safe" and that is part of the FSD programming, in that you must 'supervise' what the computer is doing. The FSD does make a long trip in traffic less stressful in that it will maneuver and change lanes as it needs to do. It has 8 cameras around the car.

I enjoyed driving some of them.

I wasn't impressed with others.

I'll stick to hybrids and my employees agree.

No. I don't want to spend hours charging a battery. I would rather just fill up my tank.
You can't go on long trips in battery cars.
Also, battery cars have too many computers that can cause all kinds of problems. I don't like SMART anything.

Hybrid yes, only electric no.
Mainly because of range. Electro car ranges especially in winter or hot summer are just 50% of promised ones.
Electro engine and battery as addition is great for ocassional high acceleration while overtaking and energy recuperation while braking. Long journeys with only electro car are annoying due charging times.

The new BYD sodium battery goes up 650 KM and charges from 20% to full in 7 minutes, just enough time to grab a drink and use the bathroom. If your summer is extreme all the time, as in over 30C consistently, you'll lose about 10-15% of that range. Same is true in winter. Optimum temps are 20 -25C. I expect these batteries will improve even more in the next 5 years.

Yes, i really would like to see the electric car become a reality. They are quiet, do not create a lot of heat and about 90% of the energy used in an electric car is used to drive the wheels as opposed to less than 20% in an internal combustion engine. In an electric car the motor has only one moving part , with an internal combustion engine has hundreds of moving parts that can wear out.
In time the technology will be developed to make snd electric car practical for everyone.

I would generally do that. The only thing that bothers me about it is that there is no exhaust sound. You know, that sounds strange, but I think this sound in the exhaust has a lot to do with both the driving experience and the ability to avoid danger.

Sure if I was in a situation where an electric car suited the kind of driving I was doing. Limited range and charge times make electric cars a niche vehicle but if you're in that niche where they work best they suddenly make a lot of sense.

I would drive anything electric. Because they are faster than gas powered vehicles are any other electrical motorcycle anything they're actually faster than gas

electric motors have a lot more low end torque and really do not need a transmission. They are really fast off the line too.

They are fast in torque and horsepower and high speed they're lightweight so they handle I've seen a lot of electric things that have just smoked gas powered motors

In concept, yes. But right now the tech is still evolving and the infrastructure isn’t built out yet. A hybrid is the best compromise at the moment but all 3 of my cars are gas powered.

I certainly would, its just that the ones they make aren't exciting or interesting for me. With the exception of Rivian. I can't pinpoint the reason but I like their sillhouettes.

@fishbone77 Your response is what I was referring to in my post. No such thing as charging for 45 minutes. I drove to Las Vegas and charged for 15 minutes there and on to LV, ONLY TO HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF CHARGE IN lV. The car charges 'Super-Fast" and no such long times for any charging. You need to have the experience

@fishbone77 My S is a Plaid, and is only rated for 386 miles because it is 1000 Horse Power. A standard 2026 is rated to 425 miles. I can put 100 miles on mine in 15-20 minutes.
