Earlier today, I saw this vehicle with an unusual sign written on the side "we speak English." And thought that's a GAG question.
The vehicle belonged to some gardening company, I never saw the owner, so I can't comment on their race.
But what's your thoughts? Why would a company in the UK write "we speak English" in large letters on work vehicle?
Note: I see lots of vehicles from England and Ireland here as well as local Welsh ones. Many have bilingual signs, but I've never seen one with these words on.
Tough to say for certain, but in the US some small businesses are owned by immigrants who haven’t bothered to learn the de facto language of the land. If you want to limit your market share to customers who share your native tongue, that’s fine. However, i’ve had bad experiences with people who barely speak English doing something very differently than what i asked for, and i know that’s not uncommon. I was fortunate that the people i was dealing with were happy to give me my money back and wish me well. I used to work with a lady who ended up in court trying to defend her choice to not pay a landscaper because they f*cked up her entire project. I don’t think unwillingness or inability to learn the language should be any kind of defense. If her contractor had spoken perfect English and did literally everything wrong, he would have been defending himself in court instead of suing. Instead of admitting that it was their own refusal to learn the language that caused the problem and if she had refused to work with them because of it, she would have been labeled a racist. A sign like “We speak English” is a brilliantly simple way to let your customers know that they won’t have to contend with any of that nonsense by hiring them. I think it’s smart and more small business owners should lean into it.
That sign would have made me laugh if it was used on a Chinese restaurant in the 2000s, back then I learnt to not ask too many questions about my lunch because I often didn't understand the answers.
Today I can just ask AI to tell me what's that rice in my plate and how much cost the shoes of the waiter...

But there are still surprises on the menu, because AI makes mistakes, it's always mentioned down below, near the privacy notice. And it's hilariously accurate, at times.
It sounds like it can be a few possibilities. The first thing that comes to mind is--they speak only English and might not want to deal with customers who are not native English speakers. If you speak another language--look elsewhere. Also, it can be seen as, "We speak clear, plain English and won't try to confuse you with any fancy (gardening) jargon. The third case would be--they are foreign owners--but they speak English understandably, so don't hesitate to call them even if they are foreign.
I think it is a sign of the times that foreigners move into a new country and expect the citizens to start to learn their language instead of them inconvience them selves to learn our ways and language. I have been told on my job as a telco installer repaire man why dont I learn Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Korean, Albanian "Greek Arabic I am an American in my own country; I speak American English. You come here; you learn to speak English. I have refused to learn any language other than English and family German
You will see such notices posted on landscaper's work trucks here if you drive down the streets where the "old money" resides, people like George W Bush and Jerry Jones. Pretty sure it's to reassure the lazy old white dudes that these particular brown people will be easier to deal with, no need to call to find out.
That's an obvious political statement. English is the official language of the UK. Many of the immigrants entering the UK speak Arabic or Hindi or some other language, and they should learn English if they wish to stay in the UK.
Actually the UK has no official language. English is the de facto spoken everywhere, welsh has de jure status, while some other British languages like cornish or Scots have protected status. The British passport is trilingual written in English, Welsh, and gaelic. My driving license is in welsh and English.

That’s good. They’re showing some gumption England. There is too many refugees trying to take over I’ve been hearing. I’m glad they’re not going to let the refugees take over their country. I don't live in the UK, but one guess is that there might be a lot of immigrant gardeners who don't speak English very well, who are looking for work. These contractors want people to know they DO speak English and using it a selling point.
In the United States it would be the opportunity to bring some José Jiménez type joke... I don't know what his British equivalent might be. Maybe an Indian in a big turban?
Maybe some fundamentalists willing to stress the fact that they want to be addressed and spoken to in English? Otherwise I can't think of a logical other reason. I'm sure you'll tell us ;0)

They know that the locals are sick and tired of having to learn many different languages because there ae illegal aliens wherever you go and they are not interested in assimilatring.
I think it is sad to live in an English country that has been over run by foreigners who do not speak English so much so that you have to promote yourself as being indigenous and speak English. Diversity is not a strength.

I think that's a useful sign since many people seem to think that people with Hispanic last names, and particularly those in the gardening profession, don't speak English very well.
