What is a “shut up ring” and does this actually happen in relationships?

I read something about some commitment phobic men feeling backed into a corner and proposing to their partner to shut her up. Is this really a real thing that happens? If so, why don't they just break up if they're unhappy with the idea of commitment and go and play the field?

They are lying to her. They are liars. If they just tell her they can’t give her what she needs , she will leave and they lose the benefits they get

i also heard of this. it seems real. i would use it if a date is going bad. stop wasting time. dont do whole date.

for Android, there are free alternatives to Interrupt Me that simulate an incoming call RINGING to escape an awkward date: i. e. Call Me app.
i also recently saw a rerun where the guy likes a girl but -
doesn't want to limit his future. so his pal advised him to get engaged because you are not married yet. i would not do that but -
if after 6 month you don't have a wedding date then the engagement ring was a shut up ring.
