I've already seen and heard it starting decades ago. In `85, I started wearing a skirt on stage to play my drums (more function than fashion). The way I play my double bass drums, pants and even shorts were just too confining so, I switched a short, loose scooter skirt and had no trouble ever since. Most of my fans DEMAND that I wear the skirt!! If I don't, to them, it's like seeing Kiss without the make-up or Angus Young in anything but his school boy outfit. About a year or two later, I started hearing of a number of other drummers doing the same thing.
There's a number of companies that now design and make skirts specifically for men. One is called, Utili-kilt. I've even seen a couple men wearing them on the job at construction sites. They're like painter's pants where they have places to hang hammers and pockets to hold various tools for easy access and they're made of a sturdy material like painter's pants. I could NEVER use one for drumming, they're WAY too stiff and billowy and would get in the way of my arms!! They also cost well over $100 per!!

and maybe that's another starting point to make a cloth loosing its associated gender to become, many years later, perceived as unisex. Since the general public is more lenient towards eccentricity when it comes from actors, performers, musicians etc.

I started seeing my 2nd girlfriend back in `83 and she ended up having to go to a psych ward for a while. She was having her third nervous breakdown. A few months later, I saw someone that looked exactly like her on the street and was about to start getting it on with her until I discovered it was a gay guy that she actually knows who likes to look like her!! Oops!! But, so what? I made a mistake, no harm, no foul. Nobody's ever said a word about it since. Not even her after I told her about it. I know where I stand on the spectrum and that's all that matters.

I see this whole gay thing upside down. It's not that someone acting insane makes me think they are gay but the other way around. Someone acting gay makes me think they are insane. There were studies on behavior of newborns that concluded that morality and so-called natural order is inherent. We are born with it.

If someone is gay then they are suffering.
