If I had to pick one from the cars in the picture, I'd probably go with one of those rock-solid Mercedes models from around the 2000s. I feel like Mercedes has lowered the quality a bit with some of their newer cars.

And don't even get me started on BMW. A lot of BMW drivers give me the impression of being aggressive, arrogant people with money who think they're more important than they actually are.

Right now, the two cars I regularly use are a 2022 Toyota hybrid and a 2018 Mercedes 4MATIC. I've driven both for a long time. To me, the main differences are that the Mercedes costs more, handles a little better, and gets more attention from people. I'm still not sure it really justifies the price.

Japanese cars are different though, and I'd include Honda in that too. Everything feels like it was designed with common sense. They're basically engineering masterpieces and amazing value for money. Especially the hybrids. Sometimes the fuel cost is so low that getting somewhere by car feels cheaper than taking public transportation 😂 And they're incredibly reliable too.

That's why Toyota feels like the kind of car smart people buy when they care more about practicality than showing off. It keeps you away from repair shops, makes sense financially, and actually feels worth the money you paid for it. So I'd definitely choose Toyota.

I've never driven a Volvo, but it also seems like one of those quality cars that smart people choose. It's luxurious without screaming for attention like a BMW. If someone wants a luxury car, Volvo looks like a pretty sensible choice too.

How about none of the above?

German cars have a shit reputation in the US. As in they are lease cars. You don’t want to own them outside of warranty. They fall apart just after the warranty expires. Parts are expensive. And they are designed to make money for dealerships with needlessly complicated maintenance requiring specialty tools.

I’d buy Lexus, Toyota, Acura, Honda, Infiniti, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, or Genesis over any German car. Hell, I’d buy Cadillac or Chevy over a German brand.

I was a GM guy for a long time but my wife had a couple of Fords and we had good luck withe them so I bought a F-150 and I am really pleased with it. It is almost 7 years old and I had a problem with a leaking rear tail light when it was new that was replaced under warrenty. It had run good ever since. No wonder it is the best selling pickup for over 40 years.

BMW M2 is probably the most fun car to drive but you'll go through a set of tires every 10-15k miles and the tires are very expensive. Just tires and regular maintenance would set you back around $3k a year and it gets much worse once the warranty is up.

Mercedes, audi and BMW are the best designs but the quality is not what it once was.

In Europe you'd buy a Seat or a Skoda. They are basically the same cars as VW or Audi but less reliant on the established legacy/brand and cut less corners with parts they use so more reliable.

If I was going to drive a car for a year and trade it in id go mercedes, then BMW, then Audi.

Probably Volvo. 😅 I like cars that feel safe, comfortable, understated, and well-built without screaming for attention. I’ve always preferred that quiet, classy kind of design. 🚗❤️
