I don’t think they had anything to do with race, reluctance to blame Islam has more to do with the overt hate towards Muslims of all kinds after 9/11. Islam like Christianity etc preaches love to some extent there isn’t a huge difference. Both of those religions preach peace while at times being used to justify the opposite
