Republicans control the Supreme Court. Thomas is 78 and Alito is 75 years of age. They would have the means of replacing both with younger judges now. Democrats are predicted to win back House and Senate in 2026 and favored to win White House in 2028.

2028? They'd have to be replaced before January next year, when the new Senate is sworn in. Expect them to retire and young, equally terrible, replacements to be confirmed by a lame duck Senate in December.

@DryGermanGuy Republicans will still have a slim majority in the Senate at least until January, possibly even longer. Since McConnell changed the rules for SCOTUS nominations in 2017 so that all they need is a simple majority vote, they can still push replacements through, even if there isn't a single Democratic vote for them. Like Barrett was, while voting was ongoing in 2020, even with one Republican voting against her.

It's not like they're interested in democracy.
