Can you imagine if employers were that dumb that they used a lottery to hire potential employees?
Employer: Do you have any experience as an OR nurse?
Jane: No, but I've worked at the Starbucks!
Employer: Close enough!

Merit is too racist 🤷♂️
I do.
Employers don't do that. Employers use H1-B visas. They don't bother with outright immigration; they just bring people over from India or wherever, have them work her for a while, then send them back to the home country and get their replacements. Happens all the time. India is the #1 temp agency on Earth.
Well, the Federal Government does use something of a lottery, but people are still vetted to some degree before they come here. That's one reason why there is illegal immigration - there's a large demand to come to the USA, but only so many legal ways and the legal ways take a long time and cost money.

From Google AI:
PROMPT: What are the typical hurdles to immigrate to the USA legally?
RESPONSE:
The typical hurdles to legally immigrate to the United States involve navigating restrictive visa categories, strict annual quotas, long processing delays, and high financial costs.
Major Hurdles in the U. S. Legal Immigration System
• Narrow Pathways: There is no general "line" or open application for people who simply want to move to the U. S. Prospective immigrants must qualify for specific, restricted categories such as family sponsorship (immediate relatives or limited preference tiers), employer sponsorship (which requires labor certification), refugee or asylum status, or the Diversity Visa lottery.
• Annual Caps and Per-Country Limits: The U. S. caps permanent employment-based and family-preference visas each year, combined with a 7% per-country limit. Applicants from high-demand countries like India and China face backlogs that can span 8 to 15 years or even decades.
• Complex Paperwork and Legal Strictness: The application process requires extensive documentation, strict adherence to legal terminology, background checks, medical exams, and proof of financial support. Minor errors or omissions can lead to severe delays or outright denials.
• High Financial Costs: Filing fees for petitions, green cards, medical evaluations, and potential attorney or legal representation fees add up to significant expenses for applicants.
• Extensive Vetting and Disqualifications: Applicants face strict health, criminal, and security criteria. Certain past actions, immigration violations, or a lack of a qualifying U. S. relative or employer sponsor can permanently disqualify individuals.
• Living in Uncertainty: Temporary work visas (such as H-1B) or pending green card statuses often restrict job mobility, limit travel abroad, and create daily instability if a job is lost.
Yes, America is the best place in the world to live so America should only allow the best of the best to immigrate here. Medical and technical professionals, educators and construction specialists should be allowed as well as wealthy investors.. The uneducated and indigent need not apply.
Hire who the country needs but not at expense of citizens
