Are girls more susceptible to media influence/brainwashing? If so, why?

It seems that girls are so much more easily susceptible to the influence of the media. Am I wrong? If it's true, why do you think this is?

Before people attack me, I'm being general here, not specific to every man and woman on the planet.

As other women have said women have more pressure on to look good.

Although, it's not just from the media, it's from men as well. How often do you ask a man what his woman should be and he'll reply "slender" or "not fat" and when you ask a woman, she'll say "kind" "caring" and if we're being vain maybe something like "a bit of muscle"

Maybe it's a more maternal thing as well... I realize people out there can't or don't want children, but women are designed to have children, obviously. And if the world is telling us we should look one way, we feel it's the only way we'll get a man and therefore the chance to have a child. Also, biologically, when you're over a certain weight, having children becomes much harder, so we have that biological pressure as well.

I don't think it's we're more susceptible I think we just have more pressure. Celebs, men, nature, even our friends. The majority of magazines focus on women, and when they do it's LOOK AT KELLY BROOKS BEER BELLY BIKINI BODY or whatever. How many times do you see men being focused like that? It makes women start evaluating themselves.

i feel like the media target's women more. things have gotten better in the last 10 years or so but still airbrushed nipped and tucked photos are being portrayed in magazines all over the world sending the message "you need to look this way, or you are not worthy of living".

for example the victoria secret annual fashion show. now given that those are real girls (real as in living and breathing not as in the everyday woman) it is possible to achieve that level of "perfection" but sometimes the lengths at which the models go to achieve the coveted "leg/thigh gap" is unhealthy and unnatural.

most women want to be called beautiful and I think that is why, in a nutshell, women are more susceptible to the media: because the media is constantly sharing photos and surgeries and celebrities with the tagline/caption "beautiful" like those things are the only type of beauty there is. then everyday women feel like sh*t.

i think the media puts more pressure of women. women are on the covers of mens and womens magazines, theyre usually the most exposed ones in movies and shows and are always seen as sexual and with great bodies. its rare that guys are shown that way, objectified in a sense and since its so rare guys just call it gay and then shrug it off, or the part of the movie/show is so short it doesn't even have any significance. if a ton of movies like "magic mike" were released and 95% of the magazine covers were of guys 'perfect' bodies then I think it would have more effect on men.

It depends on what it is. News I would say men are more influenced. As far as advertising and other subliminal messages that you can pick up via watching a reality TV show or something, I would say women are more influenced.

Men are bit more logical in the way in which we think and reason. So flashy ads, famous people, TV shows, don't influence our behavior as much because at the end of the day, those types of things are emotional. They don't effect the bottom line which is what guys want to know. For example. I don't care that some hot chick is in that commercial, all I want to know is does this sh*t really work.

Women on the other hand even though they might say otherwise, are going to be more susceptible to this type of messaging because they make more emotional decisions. A celebrity for instance will have a stronger effect on her emotions and therefore her behavior.

if they weren't people wouldn't spend so much money on advertisements directed towards men. And trust me, people in charge of these things are not going to be throwing money away with proof to back this up, and they certainly wouldn't continue doing it if it didn't garner results.

everyone is affected to a great extent but advertisers have found women will part with their money more readily if the product promisses to make them look or feel better. just look at the overwhelming ads directed at or for or about women. look at all of daytime tv, 80% female orientated. talk shows, game shows, soaps even the news is now geared to womens' interests. that is not because ladies don't watch the TV ads. they watch in droves and react in the advertisers' favour. ad people know who buys their advertised products. even the announcers, interviewers and the interviewed are mostly female because they know women react to media influence.

I think women are more prone to let things fester and eat at them then men are.

At a certain point a man just goes, oh well that's all I can do, and he's done with the issue.

For women I think they keep thinking about things even after it's been done cause they just want to do it better or more correctly(perfectionism).

Its a well known fact that women drive 70% of all consumer spending. How is this so when women supposedly make 70 cents for every dollar a man does (lie)? Easy, because women are easily influenced and much more prone to impulse purchases than men. Therefore govts and advertisers put all their efforts to catering to and influencing women. Want more proof of womens lack of logic? Women hold 2/3rds of all college loan debt but only attain 30% of STEM degrees. Women are illogical, emotional morons who should be banned from any position of power.

I agree with Catie.Media put pressure more on women than men.I think it because they know women easily get influenced more than men.Women tend to stress more on their looks compare to other stuffs.Some of the women try hard to look at least closer to the beautiful models and celebrities.Few shallow men also lead women to do this as they use to tell their girlfriend how hot their celebrities crush are...:(

Girls have a lesser ability to think logically and a larger one to think in a social/emotion context.. It is biology not opinion.

But I'd say there are larger factors at play. For example, if someone is republican then that is an admission that they have no ability to think rationally or critically at all.

There are some very smart girls and dumb guys obviously.

I find that men tend to believe almost everything that their favorite news source says, and will be very stubborn to change their views. I've noticed that women are more likeley to remember that news sources often lie or twist their information to grab interest.

I also think that men are very influenced by p*rn.

I don't know who is influenced more though. I just pointed out a couple of things to consider.
