I can run around a bounce a ball. Should I be paid the same?
Or is there something different about the way we both play the game?
Can the males command a larger audience than my unskilled flabby ass? Can they dunk better than me? Can they command better sponsors than me? Do they generate more advertising than I can?
Damn. Okay then. I suppose those guys earn the salaries they do.
@Belgie Hi idiot. [Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
Unfortunately it’s not possible , right now as many women aren’t interested in sports as men are so less people watch women’s sports. This is about viewership to the network. It would only change if for some reason a lot of women became interested in WNBA.
I think it is about attendance. 75% of the people at WNBA games are women. Ratings are up and NBA rating are down. But obviously men still dominate. WNBA is on tv less than Women's college basketball... [Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
No, the money and popularity is just not there. It should bring equal interest, and men's ball is way more popular. Men play better and it's a bit more exciting to watch.
Women's teams are more like high school grade. Not many will pay for that level and talent of play. It would have something that would draw a crowd, like playing in scimpy outfits and way more drama. Maybe that will being in a larger audience.
They are just as good a men. Basketball is a skill sport man. It ain't football meathead. [Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
THEIR PAY IS CONTROLLED BY THE MARKET. More viewers = higher pay. If we want female athletes to be paid the same, we just need to watch female sports more. As it is, most men (and women) apparently find it less entertaining, for some reason.
People say that but have never watched 1 WNBA game. Never even tried it. Don't believe that bs. [Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
If they bring in the same amounts of viewers and live spectators, as well as premium advertisers who actually want to back them, then they deserve equal pay to their male counterparts. If not, they should shut the fuck up already and work harder so that they do pull their side of the bar too
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
It's about factoring in the bottom line 🤷♀️ The bottom line is, for example, $10. This is what it costs to run the shindig. The NBA guys bring in, for example, $80.. So 50% of 70 is 35.. The bottom line for the chicks is still $10. They bring in $6. Why would you want to give them the same amount as the guys? It's not worth it. Then they might as well leave women out of sports.
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
@TrainingDay the wbna loses money. There are fixed costs to running a league and the wbna can't really cover them. While the formula is based on a revenue split ultimately that percentage was agreed to because it delivered profit reasonably.
If the WNBA became profitable the players wanting 50% of incremental profit above that point wouldn't be unreasonable.
I think it can happen, but for now they are getting a great deal. Look at where the NBA was at this point of it existence and it is similar to the WNBA. Look at low crowds and no one was making much money. As woman's sports grow and the popularity expands I see full stadiums and more revenue. Also sports channels giving them more air time and props will help. Be patient it will happen.
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
If female athletes were pulling in the kind of press attention and ad revenue that the men are, I would want them to get paid the same amount. The problem is women's sports aren't the same money makers that men's sports are. It's tough to justify the kinds of salaries male athletes make , unless they are pulling in a shit ton of ad revenue.
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
@TrainingDay Fair enough, but that doesn't take into account the other elements of the pay structure. Female players are getting health/vision/dental benefits, maternity leave, ad revenue, signing bonuses etc. Men typically just get money.
It might be possible paying women a higher percentage of revenue, but WNBA earns much less money than the NBA does. It is fair for WNBA players to make less though, since the WNBA's revenue ($60 per year) is much lower than the NBA's revenue (over $8 billion per year).
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
Maybe it is disparaging that equality in sports is not something our societies aspires too. But you can’t force people to support something they are not into. So yes women’s sports does it tough because it doesn’t generate the capital that men’s competitions do.
Na people dont give it a chance even once. Have you? [Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
As much as I support the idea of it, I don't think it's possible. Because pay is based on revenue from the league, and that is based on ticket sales, merchandise sales, and advertising. The men's leagues generate way more money than the women's leagues do.
I think.. in an ideal world, sure.. but either the male athletes would have to take a huge cut or the WNBA would need to become a lot more popular.. just.. as is, I'm not sure if the audience is big enough to match the male counterparts.. though I do think both leagues likely underpay their athletes.
Its possible, but unless the service they provide brings in an equal amount of net profit, they won't. As of now, women's sports generally aren't as popular as men's sports, and as a result, it brings in less money. Maybe it's because women aren't as interested in sports, maybe it's for other reasons. Regardless of the reasons, it is what it is. You can't say "your service doesn't make as much money as other services, so we'll literally just give you money."
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
That's what one (likely a few others) person is saying. And it'd worth pointing out that I've never heard of Kelsey Plum and she certainly isn't spearheading this movement. And I've heard this argument before, albeit a while ago, and it's not as simple as "there is money that could go to us that they are nefarious keeping from us." I don't know about the WNBA but these businesses aren't always equal. For example, the WNBA could have a larger advertising department or other departments than the NBA, resulting in the revenue being divided up among more sections, thus, them receiving a smaller portion of the revenue than another business. These things are almost never as simple as people try to make them seem. Not to mention, these people, I presume, agreed and signed off on these contracts. If they truly have an issue with it, they can all wait until the end of their contracts and them demand a higher percent of the revenue. If that's something the business can handle, they might do it. Or they might find other people to play instead. It's probably important to note that the WNBA isn't as sought after as the NBA, thus, the stars of the NBA can make greater demands and be met with acceptance. And these are only the things that immediately come to mind.
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
This is bullshit. They don't do the same like the male teams. If the US world female team for soccer can be beaten by 15yo than they don't deserve no equal pay.
Next to that is the economy factor. Male soccer is far more requested than female, bc multiple reasons. Due the gogher demand is more money, contracts, ads and so on involved. This changes the salary for a soccer player
Womens soccer in usa is better than mens though lol You're not even American. [Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
I think they can demand it until their faces go blue and they find thenselves unemployed. The audience for male sports is simply a million times bigger, and that's what decides the salaries. They should be grateful for being able to earn the amounts they do, many men and women would love to habe that. Or, you know, they can get offended, I hear it gets you lots of likes and followers today!
[Kelsey Plum] I’m tired of people thinking that us players are asking for the same type of money as NBA players.. we are asking for the same percentage of revenue shared within our CBA. NBA players receive around 50% of shared revenue within their league, whereas we receive around 20%.
Excuse me, do you know where all these money are coming from? From the fans, obviously, there is no secret. Basketball is a physical game, and male athletes are just better basketball players by the nature, therefore they perform better, their game is a lot more spectacular and therefore NBA is much more popular. And if you think that you can force someone watch WNBA, in that case you're not better than Hitler. Not hating, just the facts.

They are skilled dude. WNBA teams would destroy men college teams. You don't watch the games.

@TrainingDay THAT wasn't the question though.
A comparable percentage is absolutely a valid demand and frankly they need better agents/negotiators to break the league-wide ceiling on their wages.

In the future who knows. If it becomes as popular then sure. Otherwise no.
the women's NBA loses money and that's with the entire league combined earning what a below average starter makes in the NBA.
The reality is women are paid more than men of their ability would make.
A woman as good as NBA level players could play in the NBA and earn an NBA salary. There's no rule against it. There's no men's NBA.

Because NBA brings more money. If you generate more money, you can get paid more.
So, if more women actually support and take interest in female sports, then yeah the WNBA players will probably get more revenue.
Until then, only beach volley would get more attention as most of us guys watch it to see women in bikinis 😅
Not unless the WNBA starts making as much money as the NBA.
Women's professional sports don't generate near the amount of money that Men's professional sports do.
Sometimes it's just about economics. I'm not saying there isn't injustice in the world, I'm just saying that's not a good example of it.
