Why is it called boxing and not fisting?

There's no boxes involved. A boxer is a man who makes boxes so surely fisting would be a better name because you use your fists and not a box.

Also I believe maybe box is related to their stance and their target. They probably have to keep their feet far apart and close enough as if in an imaginary box. Also where they punch- that could be outlined with some imaginary line to liken a box. 💢⏹️

I think because boxes protect the things inside the box, and boxes have boundaries and proper entrances and exits so using the term boxing gives you the impression it's a regulated sport where boundaries are drawn and undesirable behaviour is controlled. It's a way to neutralize the aggressiveness of the sport so that it can be socially accepted.

There doesn't seem to be a good reason. It is suggested a clenched fist looks like a box but that seems pretty weak. Latin and Greek roots like pugilist look unconvincing.

Only started to be used in 1700's so not exactly in the mists of time. There is no reason it can't be a homonym and it certainly box is now. No reason for it to have anything to do with boxes. Like bow and bow.

The reason it is a boxing ring is that it used to be a circle that they fought in. Quite natural because people tend to form a ring two guys fighting. Then it was changed to be a square they just continued calling it the ring.
