Trending & News What Japanese martial arts, fighting styles or combat sports are your favorite?

I will always be partial to Karate. Shotokan was my first martial art. So many people slam Karate, but I have used it to defend myself in school, on the streets, overseas in combat and while working Corrections against inmates armed with Shivs (also known as shanks). Funny thing is I did this with only achieving Orange Belt.
People who start in Karate first tend to master later styles they learn quicker than another novice in those other arts without Karate. Karate trains in all ranges of hand to hand (Kick, Punch, Elbow/Knee and even ground). Taekwondo, boxing, muay thai and BJJ will beat a Karate practitioner in their relative expertise, but Karate makes you a balanced fighter by giving you foundations in all ranges that you can then take to other respective martial arts to expand upon.

Japanese martial arts offer a fascinating array of techniques and philosophies. My personal favorite is Judo 🤼♂️. I appreciate its emphasis on balance, leverage, and efficiency, which aligns well with my tennis background. The art of using an opponent's force against them is intriguing and has taught me valuable lessons on strategy and adaptability. Plus, Judo's focus on respect and discipline resonates with my own values.
