Why do boxing/mma fans make small skill gaps out to be enormous?

If a match is 12 rounds, they went the distance, and the loser still won 4-5 rounds how did they get "destroyed" exactly?

It depends on how the rounds were actually scored. If the winner won the majority of rounds by 10-8 or 10-7, and the loser eeked out a few 10-9s, it could easily be argued that they got “destroyed”. Though that particular word is frequently used hyperbolically these days.

I noticed that too. Always amazes me that guys who never fought and can't fight come out with statements like "he got wrecked" and act like they were the ones in the ring.

You can win a match and still get destroyed. If one fighter took damage for four rounds, survives then the one who took damage gets a 5th round knock out or submission then he was still getting wrecked for 80% of the fight.
