Should the 3rd place game be scrapped at the World Cup?

I can’t imagine either country gives a damn about playing in it and would rather have gone home already

I’m sure Mbappe still does care for one reason, he will try to score as many goals as possible. He’s still a contender for the golden boot after all, no small feat… and Messi is neck to neck with him for it.

That’s one good reason for one guy. France’s defeat was much less crushing than England’s so they have a but more motivation I expect. I don’t think England gets anything from the game at all.

Well in paper 3rd place does look better than 4th, especially for a team like France who had been to the last two finals in a row. But you’re right, I’d imagine that especially the English team would probably go into the match feeling pretty defeated and pointless.

It seems the England B team are excited to play and the French put some regulars in to help Mbappe and they are the ones who don’t care.

But the 4th place team gets 27M so they are playing for 2M which gets split at least 26 ways between the players and whoever else. It’s insignificant in the end for multi-millionaires.

I prefer MY idea. The top 3 teams automatically qualify for the World Cup, then the 3rd place match would win something

The previous champion was automatic qualified for the next one for some time and the lack of competitive matches for four years was deemed detrimental. If you are good enough to win a World Cup, you are basically a lock to qualify in a 48 team field
