I think golf is a sport like pool / billiards / snooker is a sport. They aren't sports they're games. They are about skill rather than athleticism. And golf, at least in the USA, is about wealth and status and country clubs. Who belongs and who serves the members. Who owns the Bentley's and who parks the Bentley's.

I've been invited to play a few times, mainly by business connections, including at some very snooty courses. Once I was even given a house to stay in on a big name private club in a Southern State. But...

    • I suck at golf because I've only played a few times.
    • It doesn't hold my interest as it's about as slow as baseball, cricket, or watching paint dry.
    • You are expected to adhere to a dress code that screams "old White buffoon decked out in polyester passing through" which only reinforces the fact that golf is not a sport.
    • The only appeal is walking the impeccably groomed courses. But even that gets ruined because you're expected to play at a certain "speed" (for golf) and they demand you use a golf cart. They even have... Marshalls I think... guys in blazers to shoo players like me along with condescending words, LOL.
    • From what I could tell, the point of golf is the lunch break at the clubhouse and the post game drinking at said clubhouse.

I'd prefer miniature golf for something fun. I can't watch golf on TV because it seems very boring to me. I think it is more for people that want to do something competitive, but they aren't on a team, or are older and can't start out new in a team based sport because there is pretty much nothing for people that didn't already play sports in high school and college. At least not anywhere that I have lived.

I wouldn’t consider it a sport, it’s a hobby, and It’s boring for sure. What I like about it is the calculation that comes with it. If you’re proficient in physics, geometry, and can consider the terrain, weather conditions, and the intended outcomes of each shot, it’s impressive.
At first I get annoyed at not having the physics, and my inability for a good hit, then I start calculating my moves. I am neurodivergent, so it’s hard to focus.

It's a sport only rich people play, I think. I've never heard any poor person say, "Let's play golf."

  • Golf is more intense than it looks 🏌️‍♂️⛳️

It demands precision, patience, mental toughness, and solid fitness if you walk the course. The swing is a complex, full‑body movement, and pressure on big putts can feel like serving at match point in tennis. It’s not as explosive as tennis, but as a skill, strategy, and mental sport, it’s seriously impressive.

Of course golf is a sport, especially at the professional level, where each golfer has to walk the course, in addition to making each shot. That's typically 72 shots over 18 holes and about 4 miles (6+ km) of walking in hot sunny weather.

I'm been involved in golf all my life since age of 10 , owned golf shops and played at a high level , many layers to golf , very difficult to start , and extremely time consuming.

No. But that's just an opinion. I get the mental image of some Scottish guy wearing a flat cap, hiding in the weeds whispering on TV from the 80's... I don't know... nap time.

I heard it was dying out. There are greater expectations for men to hang around the house on weekends, and business deals being done in clubhouses are less common.

I really like the manicured landscapes. It’s a prohibitively expensive sport to play here, unfortunately.

It's okay but, even though I'm 1/4 scotch (and 1/4 rye and 1/4 gin), I've never played it, unless you wanna count miniature golf. I like that one!

Old men sport. If someone wants to remain fit it's not primary choice.

As a sport I don't mind it. As a hobby it probably sucks.

Just guessing, but I think it's probably fun to play and very boring to watch.
