There should be an optional verification in every platform and badge to encourage it. But shouldn’t be strictly implemented. That's what I think.
👍👍
Absolutely against. Everyone has a right to express their opinion or do whatever they please online or offline, without having to identify themselves. It's about basic human rights. Everyone should also be aware of the fact identifying yourself online is gravely dangerous. As for minors, parents/legal guardians are obligated to keep track of their children's online as well as offline activities.
"do whatever they please online or offline"
People are not entitled to commit crimes online or offline... Sexual Predators are not entitled, neither are people who stalk people... And if you don't think your identifying information is already "out there" if you shop online, it is... If you use PayPal, it is... And parents can't be around, police their kids 24/7 ... And any forum on the internet that has both adult and underage users should do more to protect their users
People should be expected to protect themselves snd their children. No government can or will ever keep anyone safe, rather the contrary. Human and democratic rights are far more important than apprehending any number of criminals.
I don't think it would help to much. Kids could use mum or dad's ID to make an account. Or a fake ID if all you're doing is uploading an image. Do the Admins of GaG know every offcial ID card issued around the world? How would they verify what's a genuine document?
Also, do you know who the owners of GaG are? Where they are? If you upload you're driving license where is that image stored? What jurisdiction for data handling do they adhere to?
No system is perfect. But doing nothing isn't the answer either
It definitely would put the kibosh on a lot of things, good question ✌️
Thanks!

I want a one world government body to standardize online identification, since the U. S. isn't going to do it, and everyone would be REQUIRED to use their real full name on the internet with their real land-line phone number and real physical address posted with their name. If you do not have a real I. D., real phone number, and real physical address, you shouldn't be allowed on the internet.
Against. I am already sick of online censorship. I don't need to add being cancelled for leftist "wrongthink" added to my list of problems. Saying we need to take away people's freedoms for "safety" is the same argument everyone uses, including anti-gun people. Ben Franklin has a great quote about freedom and security...
I think you raise a lot of valid points, especially with regard to the sexual predators that seem to lurk on sites such as this.
Exactly! It's so easy for people to lie both about their age and their gender. Ever notice how many 100+age users GAG has 🤣
@Brainsbeforebeauty not even exaggerating! What worries me is all of these under 18 people who are here. They ask questions (like all of us did when we were teens), but have you noticed the amount of adults who answer them explicitly?
Why certain topics on here should be 18+or the whole site should... But then people just lie about their age🤷🏼♀️
@Brainsbeforebeauty that’s true too! But like I say, the adults who engage with minors on adult topics are really scary. I mean would they do the same thing in person?
But the whole point is no matter what someones age is on here, without it being verified, how do you know? People lie... Make themselves younger, make themselves older... And again, if websites would do more to crack down on underage users on sites with adult content, it wouldn't stop it all together but it would help. And also verification, would prevent people from being falsely accused. I've seen people accuse people on here of being fake, I've seen people accuse other users of being pedophiles... That crosses the line from insult to slander/libel...
@Brainsbeforebeauty agreed on all points.
Absolutely nothing against it. I can assure you, too, that if this ever becomes real, social networks would die the week after.
Also read, bring it. It would fix so much wrong.
Yes there are so many scammers online and predators something really needs to be done
Agree
Yes, but in a responsible and secure way please.
There is no system which is not safe from hackers right now...
I believe you should have to prove your identity. There's to many sex offenders and molesters out there.
Exactly!
People will just do it like fake ID's and get around all the protections or if only america implemented that they could setup a network in a different country and then go on it. And there's some countries I doubt would agree with it
I think it is essential for social media. But if folks just want to have a dirty diseased internet forum, that's their right.
In some cases I do think indenting verification is important but there’s something to be said for having the ability to crowdsource with anonymity.
i dont like to have to give a lot of real worlds info for accounts i dont wanna have to have a ID to talk on the internet. i feel like a forcing ID systems would destroy any tiny amount of privacy left on the internet and remove the whole decentralized aspect of it
I would definitely help with sites that have adult content.
Right!
maybe, but only with new laws obligating all platforms to host all speech and making it illegal to form targeted financial or social harassment against people for their online activity
I'm totally against it. That would be one step closer to being controlled by dictators. Unfortunately, I believe this is going to happen sometime in the future. Lately more and more people feel comfortable giving up their freedom and privacy for government protection. I guess they can't see how dangerous it really could be giving up your rights for security.
Against it, people have the right to privacy, and having forced online identification is a recipie for indentity theft and predatory behavior to increase.
Online banking, medical databases the IRS, etc all already have that identifying information and could also be a recipe for identity theft.
Some of those are accurate to an extent, but fraud detection exists in the ones that are, which would be way more difficult to enforce if everyone on the internet could easily figure out who you are.
it would be impossible for small websites to enforce fraud detection, and those are the best sites tbh.
Not everyone is using online banking, online tax filing, or online medical care, and for those who do, they are making the choice to do that, not being forced to.
I honestly would prefer ditching online accounts entirely and making everyone anon again.
having identity requirements points out where everyone is, you would be giving online predators information they shouldn't have about the people they are preying on, meanwhile they are using fake identification hacking tools and a vpn.
Do keep in mind, the internet is a multinational thing, other countries don't have the same laws, so being anonymous is the only way to be safer.
Plus we should be going farther away from a police state, not deeper into it.
We shouldn't police criminals🤔 we shouldn't try to stop crime 🤔 we shouldn't try to do more to protect our children from online predators?
giving out everyone's identity does nothing to stop crime, police criminals, or stop predators.
IT HELPS THEM.
I think maybe you need to learn how internet connections work before suggesting how it should be ran.
if we did what you are suggesting, those crimes would skyrocket in number.
what keeps people safe online is being anon
In principle, yes. In practice very few people will be happy sharing their credentials online to access adult services/content.
Leftists complained for 4 years about Trump bring Hitler, but who are the ones pushing all powerful government.
So projection it is.
I'm no leftist.. and this isn't about government... It's about websites doing more to protect it's users... Not from insults, so this isn't about free speech, but sex predators, stalking and harassing people are illegal activities, even "online"
