It’s a necessity if you have asthma and are stuck without an inhaler or went camping and are having a heart attack her or someone is trying to rape you or you’re stuck in a burning building or your boat capsized.. really depends on the situation.
ESP Bc we do not have pay phones like they did when there were no cell phones. If you took phones away suddenly With no Alternative means of communication , there’d be no way to get help in an emergency.
in the past it was a luxury, but in this day and age its a necessity. majority of our communication is through our phones. just try sending your boss a letter asking him if you can take a sick day...
There are still a lot of places where employees do not have the boss's mobile number. A lot of jobs the bosses may not be at long. For example in retail you would call the store and not your boss's mobile phone. You may have a boss and then within a year or 2 have a mew boss then within some time have another new boss.
This day in age with no payphones and fewer landlines, it's safest to have one, so I say in a way it can be a necessity if you have no other way to get a hold of someone.
Because I have a bad neighbor who vandalized my cars so they would not run when there was an power outage, and I was out of food water and no car to get to the store. If I had a working phone at that time I could have at leased gotten food and water delivered. There r no more pay phones. What if there's someone dieing u might need a phone
LMAO. That's like asking if CD/DVD players are necessary. Somehow, the human race manage to survive without cell phones until the technology went on the market in the 1990s.
In the past i would have said luxury. But as they've become more prevalent pay phones have become pretty much non existent. And landlines becoming less and less with each year. So it's almost become a staple technology.
What are you talking about? Most people alive today spent the first half of their life without one. People over 30 outnumber people under 30 in the world. So most people lived without one till they were like 10-15 years old.
It’s only because of the way society has progressed that I would say they’re now a necessity... back in my parents day they probably wouldn’t have been needed
Depends on what you do for a living. If you are a contractor constantly on the road, you absolutely have to have a cell phone, but an office worker who has a landline won't really need it.

When Cell Phones are the only use for one to make a call then they are a Necessity, I can't see for me to have a Home phone I don't get many calls so I like the cell phone.
While I often wonder how we got things done before them, they are becoming more of a requirement lately. [ Who would have thought I'd be shooting pictures of my checks to deposit them?]
As far God is concerned, food and clothing are the only needs you have in life and you can live in the mountains sleeping in a cave and that should be good enough for you. LOL.
Literally, everything else is a luxury we classify as a "need".

I could not say to my parents. :(.
@Cahittinsan01010 Oh, yes? How have you been?

When I was 10-15 people still had landline phones at home. Some people do still have them but most have mobile phones instead of them.
It’s only because of the way society has progressed that I would say they’re now a necessity... back in my parents day they probably wouldn’t have been needed
It’s a bit of both. Hardly anyone has a landline anymore so you need a cell phone to make and receive calls. But cell phones can also be expensive.
There are no more pay phone booths so you would really be in trouble if your care broke down or something.
Cell Phones are a necessity
smart phones are a luxury
I don’t have one. However, I do have an iPad. I find I use a lot of apps to conduct business and for personal use.

At first it was a luxury but it has grown to be a necessity as time and technology advances.
They're a necessity NOW, not that everyone needs the latest iPhone but everyone needs a mobile communication device.
In modern America, at least, it's a necessity. Same goes for internet access.
Neither, it's not necessary, nor is it a luxury. Nothing luxurious about common phones.
