the number of pistons and their configuration is not a matric of performance. look at the torque needed for your particular application and choose your car my the torque it can provide.
i'll just show you one example that demonstrates how little configuration and piston numbers say about performance:
1945 lanz bulldog tractor: only 1 singular piston. 500nm of torque.
2006 toyota tundra: v8 with only 280 nm of torque.
here's a laymans explanation that any professional will probably beat me up for:
horsepowers tells you how fast you can go.
torque tells you how much weight you can pull.
Depends upon horsepower and torque. In general, a V6 should get the job done.

Unless it is a big SUV like a a suburban then a v-6 should be okay.
