It's neat for people who are physically incapable or otherwise dangerous to themselves and others to be behind the wheel, but otherwise it's just another dumb gimmick to jack up the price of vehicles and ultimately gatekeep them from the plebians who can't afford them.
Im also a bit baffled as to why car manufacturers would even want to develop that technology when it basically guarantees that if ANY accidents happen, the lawsuit is going straight to them. Once the novelty of "new" technology evaporates, it's pretty much nothing more than a lose-lose for them.

+1 yYes. Humans are just as bad. They will run you off the road. Autonomous cars can communicate near instantaneously without quarrel.
Once truckers are rendered obsolete with cross country driving, people will be more comfortable with driverless cars when they realize they’ve been driving beside them all along. Then everybody will pretty much be getting taxi’d around.
Frankly, I’d think the women here would support it in the name of equality. There is no “equality” in my family when it comes to driving. The women all have licenses, but men do most of the driving because they prefer the passenger seat. The men prefer the passenger seat, let the car do it. So what’s the real difference?

Maybe when they are 100% guaranteed reliable I would think about it.

In brief, NO!!
Technology is all fine and good, and does a whole lot of good. However, the fully autonomous cars have taken a lot of lives by crashing into other vehicles or inanimate objects.
It does make a difference who one listens to on the subject as to which is more safe; autonomous, semi-autonomous, or manually operated.
As for me, I'm not ready to bet my life on the technology being right.
00 ReplyNope. I don't trust them. I prefer to be behind the wheel and in control.
With the right technology, someone can take control of the car with you in it.
I also don't want a vehicle tracking my every movement and listening to my conversations.00 Reply
+1 yMy feelings about autonomous vehicles are mixed, but sure enough I'd like to have at least a test drive. Maybe it's only a matter of getting accustomed. A human driver can make mistakes, while an artificial intelligence may display some bugs. In my case having a autonomous car may come in handy, because I don't even have a driver licence ;0)

+1 yAutopilots are very common in aviation and at sea as well.
It still requires human supervision, but generally I'd feel ok with it.
I just don't see yet how it would work on my motorbike. And all the enjoyment of driving and of breaking the rules would be gone :(
00 Reply Absolutely NOT. I live one of the countries the Google car had an incident in, and this was for excessive prudence. Autonomous vehicles here will be only an harm for everyone.
00 ReplyNever. We've all seen now how many bugs are in even fairly simple programs. Why would you ever trust a vehicle driven by something so error-prone that can kill you?
00 ReplyIt needs to build my trust in it like everything. But after that sure that would be a blessing and a serious freedom if the price is right.

+1 yI do not trust automated vehicles. I must have some form of control. Last few months I've heard about accidents that happen in Texas where the guy put his vehicle into automotive mode and was killed. The vehicle failed to stop at a red light.

+1 yNo, but I’m a little more trusting if it still has a steering wheel and pedals. If they stop installing steering wheels and pedals, I’ll avoid that shit.

One thing I have heard is that self driving cars could virtually eliminate auto insurance. I like that possibility.
00 ReplyI trust a Fully Autonomous vehicle to drive into traffic once I speak ill about the powers that be. Imagine buying your own slave cage on wheels.
00 ReplyNot really.
Computers are not 100% reliable, and it is possible for them to be hacked as well.00 ReplyMaybe if it's been out to the public for a few years.
