Can an update on your phone delete all your photos?

My boyfriend told me he updated his phone but it deleted all his pictures can the updates really delete all your pictures off your phone I've never known my phone to do that when I do updates on it

Its rare. For this the update has to delete the entire harddrive, and in this occasion everything would be gone.

Usually, in 99.9% of the cases, an update just replaces old files and doesn't touch anything unrelated to the updated files.

Yes if he gets a new phone and doesn’t transfer data that is possible. Why did you want to know about his pics?

He told me the update deleted his photos and I was asking about it because I don't know if he still wants to be with me or not he keeps bringing up we might not work out a lot when we talk

Sounds like he wiped the phone clean. There are likely on a cloud or his Google account.

On rare instsnces OS updates can whipe user data, so it's wise to back it up to another device.

Not unless there was no space left on the phone which you would get a warning about before any data is deleted

Rarely happens bcz of an update.. never heard of it before... his data is not saved on Google drive or cloud?
