Do you think there would be a place for airships today with modern technology?

We all know the use of airships, blimps, and dirigibles died out almost a century ago with the terrible Hindenburg disaster. But what if we revisited the idea of airships with modern technology? A family vacation in a luxury blimp? A scenic flight in a dirigible? Thoughts?

It's a dead technology, let it die.

I would like to see what we could do with modern technology.

"Lighter than air" vessels have significant limitations and restrictions that can't be "solved" - the most important one being that they cannot be safely operated in high wind conditions, which means there are many many days per year that they cannot be operated. They are also inefficient for general transportation - their weight carrying capacity is limited, their top speed is very low, and their engine/fuel efficiency isn't nearly as good as a faster-flying plane. They are really only useful for tasks where flying SLOWLY is an asset - which is why they have been used for sports broadcasting for a long time.

Modern models have only made very small improvements compared to 100 years ago.

Of course- but not much of one. They'd be more a novelty than anything else. Strange, considering they were the terror of two wars...
