Curiosity got the best of me! Do you know why Dawn dish soap has a picture of a cute 🦆 on it?

I've been buying Dawn dish soap for years and always wondered why there's a ducky on the front of it. Well, today, out of curiosity, I read the back of the bottle and it said, it's the "Only brand trusted by rescue workers to help save wildlife". Without googling it, do you know why/when it started? As a hint, it was way before I was born but a very interesting story.

I first recall Dawn soap being used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill in the late 1980's. I don't recall its use being publicized before then.

That's correct. The rescuer's tried all kinds of degreasers but they were all too harsh for the animals, so, one of them thought of Dawn and it worked amazingly well. As a person in marketing, what a gift that was literally handed to them! Now, they donate one dollar for the preservation of wildlife, for every bottle sold. I was actually watching the Dawn commercials after the oil spill happened on YouTube today. Very interesting. I have never seen a commercial for Dawn.

Anyway, it was as a result of a 1989 incident, off the coast of Alaska. An Exxon Valdez oil ship hit a reef and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil. The rescue workers tried every type of degreaser to clean the wildlife but they were too harsh and toxic, so, a member suggested Dawn, because their motto was, "hard on grease but gentle on skin" or something similar lol and it worked better than expected! As I said to another Opiner, I'm in sales and marketing and would literally pee myself if a marketing campaign like that was literally gifted to me! Sales increased by 300% within one yr! As I also told the Opiner, yes, I'm a nerd! 😊

Yes! They also give one dollar to the preservation of wildlife for every bottle they sell. Yeah, I'm sure they raised the price by a dollar through the first couple years of the campaign but people are willing to pay it for something that I can appreciate, so, everyone wins in a sense.

That is actually very good, I'm not a finance wizard but a dollar a bottle is very good and a big chunk cause their bottles are like no more that like 4 dollars so 25% per bottle is generous.

You're better at marketing than you realize, because that dollar per bottle, will actually increase sales when you promote it! Oh, yeah, a dollar toward something pretty much everyone will support, when promoted correctly, like Dawn did, will make your money back ten fold! Now they're number one when it comes to dishwasher machines.

Yea it's a double benefit, it makes people proud of their purchase and compared to other companies it might also win with competition if the person is a good person they would go for the one that supports other causes, it's definitely a good promo technique when it comes to profits and when it comes to a world issue and on top of it you can still use it yourself if by any chance you run into an animal stuck in oil, with the foods we got here its all grease so another benefit, Dawn has better smells too, my favorite one is the light blue that smells like a waterfall and the green one, orange one isn't bad either.

Yes, and he was also accused of being drunk but I guess it was never proven, because the captain didn't advise authorities of it right away and once he did, it took hours before they got there.

Actually, I've never seen the commercials. Also, when was it realized that Dawn was very effective for cleaning wildlife from oil? And it's not just ducks.

I guess someone already knew it got the grease out (as those early adds said) so, they tried it on oiled ducks and it worked great without hurting them so, now they tout its safety on animals. Why wouldn't it be? It doesn't hurt us and we're animals. Or, are we?

Lol... Yes, that is true, we are animals. Some more wild than other's but animals. I just think, as I'm in sales and marketing, what a joy it would be to have a campaign literally gifted to you, like Dawn did. My parents and grandparents always used Ivory dish soap! Mom was allergic to certain kinds of dish soap so, she could only use Dove. I can use whatever''s handy. I kinda prefer dawn but, at the moment, thanks to the food bank I go to every month, I recon, guess & calculate that I've got enough dish soap to last me the next 3 years or better! I started a new bottle LAST July and I suspect I'll be done with it within the next 2 or 3 weeks.

I can totally relate to your mom! I'm really picky with soap too. I actually only use Dove on my face when I shower. It isn't so greasy but yet, is considered a "facial" soap, so, it will moisturizer it but not over moisturize it. I used to use Caress for my whole body but it was way to greasy for my face and I ended up breaking out, so, now I just use it for a body soap. I know you don't care but I know what your mom was talking about! 😜

She used to use Caress to, for a while and so did I but, I kept noticing that it made me smell like I'd been around a cigar smoker so, I quit using it.
