Should there be regulation of AI and what users can do with it nationwide?

Vice President JD Vance
Vice President JD Vance

The current Vice President of The United States of America falsely claimed on stage of the Paris AI Summit that ‘excessive regulation would kill a transformative industry’ and going as far to say this is the new ‘steam engine’ that will not go to pass…

I would like to say, I’ve always had a stance on AI prior to JD Vance. I think Chatbots are funny, deepfakes can be entertaining, and who doesn’t love getting assistance with homework 24/7 around the clock…. Though I have to admit it is a scary thought floating over my head that we don’t regulate an industry that can be used for 1. Blackmail 2. Misinformation 3. Revenge Porn and 4. Scams

To some who agree with Vance already, I want to make a reminder: We regulated the car industry to be safer with seatbelts when companies claimed seatbelts would look “unsafe” & “result in low sales of future models” which never came. We made DUI a crime, made it so you had to get a license through the DMV and tested cars based on safety ratings so it is street legal. Why not do the same for AI?

I wanted to get this out there as fast as I could because Americans shouldn’t drop the ball with this one, this is a big issue that will lead to too many problems if we don’t speak out now. If this were Tim Walz saying this I’d be against it and am in this hypothetical, the fact is this administration is all over the place & I will speak up because to remain silent is to be complacent. Thank you, your thoughts?

Yes, Regulation for AI is a must (not banning AI, just regulation)
No, AI must be free to grow without any regulation in sight (not even legislation on crime prevention)

Update: Apparently Musk is looking to acquire OpenAI which showcases the true reasoning why they don’t want to restrict AI misusage. Interesting.
