Why do chats go dead?

Not flaky small talk chats, but deep long engaging chats which are the online equivalent of a real life conversation. It is definitely this addiction to 'the next post/ comment' that makes us lose interest in our chats? How often does it happen to you and how much do you hate it or do it yourself to people you chat with?
