Why You Need to Go North on Your Visit to the UK

A lot of my Southern friends would disown me for saying this but in a lot of ways, the North of England is actually better than the South! (WARNING: the author of this article is very biased to the North -East)

Let me tell you why, covering the 4 regions of the North: Lancashire , North-East, Yorkshire, and the Lake District

What is wrong with the South?

Nothing! The South is very beautiful, we have the New Forest, London, Cornwall, etc but a lot of tourists spend all their time down here when there are amazing treasures up there! People come to the south and can often have experiences with us that make them think we are close-minded, cold, snobby, etc. There are a lot of people like that down here but you do get a lot of nice ones. Up North, I can say that (especially in Yorkshire) the food tastes cleaner and better. I would definitely say you check London out and that you will find fun places here but do try the North!

For places to stay, check out Tripadvisor but the UK have two chain hotel companies that are great and pretty affordable, they are the Travelodge, who are generally quite cheap and facilities, mattress comfort, and cleanliness can vary greatly from hotel to hotel, but really good if you are on a budget. The next is Premier Inn which is also very well priced, you have excellent quality in every one, and the beds are comfy. Check both in the area you are staying. If you can get a Premier Inn, I would 100% choose it over Travelodge.

Ay-up!

That is the stereotypical greeting of a Yorkshireman. Yorkshire is a large area of the the south-east of the North full of farmland, hills, quaint villages, and several gigantic urban areas. The people in Yorkshire are very down to earth, can be very friendly, hard-working, and quite tough. Their accent is great, you just have to tune into it. Visit the Dales or the Moors, here is a picture of the Dales which captures the feel of the land and the people:

When you visit Yorkshire, try their pies! The meat comes straight from their farms close by.

If the country is not for you, you will find more than enough entertainment in the cities of Leeds, Bradford, Hull, Harrogate, York, Sheffield (home to the UK's biggest mall!), and Doncaster.

One funny thing I have noticed about the girls I have met from there, they have two modes, either absolutely no make-up, or they look like they went for a make-over with Nicki-Minaj's make-up artist.

Here is a humorous video about the people in Yorkshire and you can hear their accents:

Cumbria- The Lakes.

Cards on the table, I have never actually been to the North-west but I can tell you what I have heard.

The lakes is the north-west area of the North and whilst I actually know NOTHING about the people there, I have never even met anyone that comes from there, I can show you some pictures of why so many of us Southerners (I will soon) go there on holiday. You may not find very many good hotels here, try looking for campsites and googling ideas.

The area of Liverpool (Beatle hometown), Manchester, and Lancashire make up the south-west of the North. The people I have met from there are nice. They all seem very proud of the Beatles and their sports teams. Haha, some of them have a thing where they hate the Yorkshiremen and dis the heck out of them, usually based around football (soccer) and once, I was at this religious gathering for young people and it was a mix of people from around the country, mostly southerners, and this guy from Liverpool gave a speech on coming closer to God and never giving up, it was wonderfully inspiring but he peppered the whole thing with hate references to people from Yorkshire, compared Yorkshire to hell, and upon hearing that there were some people from Yorkshire that had travelled a ways to get down here in the audience, he started screaming to get them out of there because they were filthy, filthy thieves. I am sorry, I have never really heard of Yorkshire having a kleptomaniac thing, but I have heard of lots of people from Liverpool coming down here and stealing things from their workplace. I don't think someone who lives in urban agglomeration has the right to call the Dales and Moors hell...I have friends that go up to Liverpool and Manchester and swear it is the best place they have ever been. I have yet to see it! It is supposed to be one of the best musically culturing places in the world and you will find all the typical city-going things you need. My favourite thing is the Liverpool accent.

The friendliest people in the UK...

You are driving North for what seems like hours, you never want to see another motorway, pylon, or transit lorry again! Suddenly, you see a dark figure appear as you clear a hillside. EWW! It appears some giant woman has had an affair with a plane and produced a big ugly brown baby that wants to take off. You are in Newcastle!

I saved my favourite for last, the area of Tyne and Wear and Northumberland is a really special treat. Newcastle is the biggest city, worth visiting just to meet the people. I can not really think of anything beautiful or culturally edifying the city has to offer but the people make up for it! They actually like to talk and for someone that lives in the South that is really touching and you just like them instantly. They show a genuine interest in you and tell you things and the workers I met there seemed to really go the extra mile with customer service. The accent is really cool, you have to tune in a bit and if you have a regional West country accent like me, you have to speak clearly to be understood. The girls are seriously cute! A lot of Southern men often remark that they went up there, saw a cute, sweet little woman and their heart melted but then hardened again when she opened her mouth to speak! Lol. I can not see why, I think they have a lovely accent. Watch this video if you don't believe me:

Do you like shopping? Visit the Metro Centre (pronounced "me'ro" by locals) and have a good look around. Eat their fish and chips, they are amaaazing! Northumberland is beautiful, kind of like Yorkshire with beautiful beaches and some castles.

You can go out on a boat at Seahouses and see the beautiful Farne Islands where there are seals and puffins. When you have torn yourself away from this area, you can easily drive up or catch the train to Scotland which is worth a Take of it's own!

BONUS: I tell you the name and postcode of what I consider to be the best chip shop I have ever been to in the country (and I have been to lots)

Surprisingly, it is not in the North but in the South close to London. RH7 6BA Pop that into your SatNav and try not to drool as you drive there. It is called Lingfield traditional fish and chips. The chips are so sweet, soft, moist, and tasty! Please visit for a treat! Please come to the UK and see for yourself why it is so special.

If you liked this take, tell me and I will do a short one on Wales.
