Nope. It has nothing to do with being chicken. It has to do with being stupid and having a craving for excitement overcoming your intelligence to keep you alive.
For those who die, it's evolution in action.
This video is silent but there was sound with the original video...
In 1988, 35-year old Ivan Lester Maguire jumped out of an airplane to videotape other skydivers who jumped out right after them. After they pull their ripcord, Ivan pulls his... except it's not there. He thought he had a parachute on, but he didn't - it was his camera equipment. He is a famous example of winning a Darwin Award.
Unfortunately, this is said all-to-often...
https://www.youtube.com/embed/MH7KYmGnj40 Yep, definitely sounds chicken (afraid of dying). More power to you though, play it safe. I don’t know the numbers, but I’m guessing you pulled two examples out of thousands of divers who didn’t die.
I also am not too interested in skydiving, not because I’m scared to die as 1. I’m not and 2. I don’t see skydiving as that risky. It’s just another rollercoaster ( yes people die on rollercoasters too, I know) . I just don’t actually think it would be that exciting for the cost. I think going snowboarding (people die skiing and snowboarding, yes I know) would be more fun for the money.
@zeitgeist057 omg the parachute not opening is the main reason I would skydive
*wouldn't lol
@asker well, there is a risk, but you can calculate the risk. According to this article skydiveperris.com/.../
Parachute failures happen about one in 1,000. To me, even though I'm not worried about dying, is an unacceptable level of risk. But that's for the main chute. You also have a reserve parachute, which I am guessing has the same rate of failure to open. So the odds of them BOTH not opening would be that one in 1,000 and then again if it was that 1 time in 1,000, it would have to be that one in 1,000 time for the second chute as well. Those are very slim odds, literally one in a million.
How to calculate probability: www.khanacademy.org/.../compound-probability-of-independent-events
@asker. as stated in the article, you are more likely to die driving in your car on the way to the skydiving drop zone, than you are on the actual skydive (assuming the drop zone is several miles away).
Everything is dangerous. It's dangerous to be in a car. Dangerous to walk on the sidewalk, to eat out, to go to a party, go swimming in the ocean, go swimming in a pool. Almost everything you do has an element of danger to it. A one in a million chance of dying is a very low risk.
the bigger risk is living a life full of fear and missing out on the amazing experiences that are to be had. I literally am not interested in skydiving because I've had LOTS of exciting experiences in my life, to the point where skydiving just seems like another roller coaster ride, and an expensive one.
I've only done it once (and only a tandem jump), but it was great fun, and I'd go again in a heartbeat.
One of my ex girlfriends and her siblings all got given skydiving training courses for their 16th birthdays (from their dad), so they've all done lots of solo jumps - I was always very envious!
I'm pretty keen to get a paramotor one day, which I guess is vaguely similar (I've been paragliding before).
I would love it go skydiving even though I might chicken out last min.
Nah, I want to have enough left of me that's not paste.

Nope it’s likely the only thing I would not do.
i have a thing about jumping out a perfectly serviceable aircraft.
I also do not trust myself enough to do it.
i have been very close to doing it via ejecting from a jet lol.
bit we landed with a very unserviceable aircraft lol.
Absofuckinglutely & there is nothing like it & I’m proud to say I’ve gone three times already & in the spring I plan on doing it again. Free falling for 60 seconds at 120mph above the clouds was out of this world.
Have done it, crashed into a forest. 9/10 would recommend
Sounds painful?
Not very, was one of those round chutes. Very good for lift and safety (opening). But doesn't have steering of any kind.
It's a long story, of me finding a place to drop into when moving really fast above tall trees.
Balancing in a very flimsy branch as i try to make my way towards the tree, while about the height of a 4 story building.
Will go again some point, just going to go for the square chute this time🙃
Since the time I did paragliding, I am just waiting for the day when I will sky dive. I just want to feel free fall.
Been there, done that, worn the T Shirt... And I would certainly do it all again.
Yes my wife never wanted me to and to be honest I was always working but hell I’m thinking I’m gonna go give it a try
It would be quite an experience... Yeh I would do it
I'd try it at least once, done bungee jumping before, always wondered what skydiving was like.
Been on my bucket list for years now. I'm for sure gonna do it in 2022
I would rather take flying lesssons but I would do this.
I really want that. If i get out of my cowardness i will try that
Hell yea im a heartbeat. i want to go up as high as you cam go before you need O2
If it’s somebody’s treat and they really encourage me Then I’ll go
Would love to experience it. Don’t know if I could make that first step or not.
As an aircraft mechanic there’s no way I’m jumping out of a good flying plane
You only LIVE ONCE why NOT LIVE LIKE YOU HAVE NO TOMORROW?
Yes, I've been and it was incredible.
Bold! Wasn't it scary tho?
Lol yes. I'm absolutely terrified of falling lol but you're so high up that your brain can't even register what's happening so it doesn't give you the falling sensation.
So how did it feel once you fell off that plane 🤯
The initial backflip was scary but then you're just kind of there in the sky. It was very cold lol
No, I don’t believe in taking unnecessary risks.
You sound fun.
Scarry but will be fun
