What do you think of this small medieval French village?

Carcassonne, a hilltop city in the Languedoc region of southern France, is famous for its medieval citadel, La Cité, with its many watchtowers and double walls. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, while the main additions were made in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Comtal castle, which dates from the 12th century, offers archaeological exhibitions and a visit of the inner ramparts.

This is why those of us in the New World like to visit the Old World. We just don't have that kind of thing here. The natives had almost no permanent settlements, so we just don't have old stuff.

I remember an online friend in Europe showing me pictures of her vacation. I made a comment about the "red tile roofs" being so "old world" and why we like traveling to Europe. It's so common to her that she was baffled that anyone would care about it.

When my brother was visiting relatives in England, he was talking about the castles he wanted to see. One of the little kids asked why he wanted to see castles. His parents answered "Because they don't have them where he comes from". Isn't that what traveling is all about? Seeing and experiencing things you don't have where you live?

For those of us in the New World, Europe is like a fairy tale.

This is exactly what a fortified city should look like. I have forgotten what the upper structures of a tower that jut out (for pouring hot oil etc on attackers) are called but I am pleased to see one in the fifth pic. Obviously the other towers nearby had them too as you can see where the beams of wood were supported.

We will go visit this summer since we are going to Avignon as well. Hope won’t be too hot.  We couldn’t go last summer because of the forest fire.

Of course I've heard of it. It's very famous. I wanna visit. They even named a board game after it apparently. Though I think there are villages that are prettier. Did you click these?
