It's really an American thing I think. Used to be part of our local super scheme at the youth centre and every day we'd go do something like horseback riding, ice skating, zip lining, indoor water park, indoor skydiving, inflatable Park, archery, sports, the zoo, jet skiing, canoeing, Tayto land, castles, museums. A few times we got taken over to England to go to Alton towers, lego land, water parks etc which are giant compared to the stuff in Ireland. In alton towers you would need a week to go on everything

We never had stuff like that when I was a kid. If you wanted you could hang out at the school playground but let's face it, after spending 9 months at school, that was the last thing I wanted to do
