I hitchhiked a lot as a kid. When i first got out of high school I had a job in the city about 20 miles away and I hitchhiked to work just about every day. I went all over New England with just the thumb on my right hand.
When I had my own car I used to pick up people all the time. I never had a problem with anyone. I met some pretty cool people and even met some nice girls once. I picked up a group of nursing students during a snowstorm.
This was a long time ago. It is a different world today,
Wow, that does sound really interesting. But whilst I do think the world is in a pretty sorry state of affairs, there has always been psychopaths. I can't help but think of how dangerous this could have potentially been, then and now. I've seen The Poughkeepsie Tapes 🤧
@WhereIsMyMind One time I was going to visit a friend that lived about 300 miles away. I got picked up by some guy and i determined that he was deaf,. He was trying to carry on a conversation with me. He was a good lip reader but he had to look at me to figure out what I was saying. Every time he did this he started to drift off the highway. I was trying to keep quiet but he just would not stop and I tried to be polite.
I got picked up by Shel Silverstein once. He is a famous author and song writer. He wrote "On the Cover of the Rolling Stone" among others.
I have hitch-hiked an estimated 15 thousand miles. I have also picked up a lot of hitch-hikers. I don't know how many, probably several dozen. Pretty sure it's less than a hundred.
I've never had any problem at all picking up hitch-hikers. I've only had VERY minor problems hitch-hiking myself.
I've run into a lot of "interesting" people both ways. I think people who are really into traveling tend to be a different breed to start with. Also, most of my hitch-hiking was in the 70s when people were very free spirited and were not exactly your normal crowd. Not in a bad way, just different. It made for some colorful memories.
Stranger danger. Last time I tried to get adventurous with people I wasn’t cautious about, I ended up in a sundown town in tears hoping to find my way out.
A literal sundown town? 😮
@DryGermanGuy yup. A literal sun down town where my kinda folks cannot be outside during sunset.
I thought this sort of thing died out in the 70s... do they also have the Klan?
@DryGermanGuy no Klans but it’s just an unspoken thing in that town really.
Yes and it went well but my boyfriend doesn't really like it. Although I'm sure he could change his mind if he saw the girl of the photo here 😂

Yeah, in 2011 when me and my dad were on Maui, we were traveling the Road to Hana and we picked up this cute girl. She had no specific destination. She said she was on her day off and was simply exploring and that she'll just go wherever we're going. Our next stop was this garden with an ancient heiau. We offered to take her along with us for the entire day, we ended up ditching her at the gardens 'cuz we were on a tight schedule and she was slowing us down.
Then another time when I was in Poland, me and my uncle picked up some guys who were on their way to a local film festival.
Those were the only two times.
If the hitchhiker looked like that , I think every guy would stop and pick her up lol But I have picked up a hitch hiker before but it’s something I don’t do often , it mainly stems down to where they are at at the time and if I am familiar with my surroundings and I know I have my gun on me for protection just in case. The hitch hikers I picked up were legit nice people that didn’t come off as shady to me and this occurred back in the day when this society wasn’t has bad as it is today , sadly in today’s world we really can’t trust anyone compared to how it use to be. People back then were more civil and trusting compared to how it is today
Picked up a lady who was broken down in a hurricane one time in college. She was trying to walk to the gas station for a tow. We waited out the storm at my apartment which was around the corner from the gas station because they'd closed early for the storm. Dated a few times afterwards.
Helped one guy go from the inner city to the outskirts. Very interesting conversation with him. Had to literally pick up two drunks lying in the street once and drive them to their apartment block. I am just glad I did not drive over these idiots. 🤬
I’ve never picked up a hitchhiker, no. I like to do a good deed on the road, giving way to people and letting them out/through at junctions etc, but in the interests of safety you never really know who the hitchhiker is or what their intentions are… there’s always that minuscule chance they’re a carjacker or something.
Yes, I once picked up a bunch of college girls waiting for the bus to take them downtown. It was in a really nasty snowstorm on a Friday night.
i have, many times as a young adult. i do now on rare occasions, when i see someone that really needs help. i still always carry a gun in case it's a trap. i've never had an issue.
No. I remember I was going to and my supervisor blew me up. Then thought about it and realized how dumb I was being.
I have occasionally picked up a hitchhiker, if I recognize them. I don't pick up total strangers.
I would never do that. I do not help others if it puts my own life in danger.
Over the Years, I Probably Have. I am Still Here, dear. lolxxoo
No, but some decades ago I got picked up without asking. Since it was a woman I felt it was safe to do so.
Pff no and I would never, I'm too paranoid for that shit lol
I never did, and if she looked like that, I’d be afraid that the boyfriend was hiding in the bushes to hijack the car
Because I do not know who is the person, these days can not be trusted easily.
No, never picked up a hitch hiker. I don’t trust random strangers on the street.
I have thought about it; but I haven't stopped yet. I am usually over a mile away when I decide that I should have.
I've hitchhiked before. Unfortunately the couple that picked me up weren't hot and nothing happened lol 😂 listened to some good music though!
I have when I was younger. It went well with a nice conversation and eventually dropping her off when she asked me too near her friend's house.
