Are all tropical beach vacations the same?

An ancient argument from behind the bar, you go to the beach, it's nice and warm, white sands blue waters, you do a waterfall hike, a jeep safari, maybe some snorkeling, but is it just us or are they all kind of the same regardless of whether it's the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Guam, Martinique, Roatán, etc

Id say no but they fall into two categories:

1) poor countries (think Cuba, Thailand) where accommodations and everything is cheap but there lots of crime and everything haggling
2) rich countries (think Florida, Australia, etc) where it's super popular and expensive but safe to walk at night, eat the food..

All places tropical aren’t the same, but typically the tourist spots often offer similar amusement attractions within reach of the airport/seaport/hotel. The question is, do you take the time to experience what the locals do, or just hang out in the zoo with all the other tourists and do the same old shit.
