Even though DC is technically a district
Outside of NYC and Buffalo, NY isn't that bad. Illinois outside of Chicago is largely the same story. California outside of LA, SF, and to a lesser extent San Diego may as well be a different state too. Mississippi is in my opinion the worst state in the south or roughly on par with Louisiana and Alabama for that title, but all of them still have decent places to live.
Washington DC being on here really throws the entire question on its head though, because it's singling out one city that despite not actually being that big, is easily one of the worst in the country. Picking the actual states broadly still gives you options, but Washington DC specifically is a guaranteed sh*t sandwich, so no question, that's the worst one on the list.

I would have said DC if I’d known more about it.

+1 yDC. California and New York are expensive and have some really crappy areas, but also have some wonderful enclaves. Illinois has some nice areas, especially downstate. Mississippi has some really nice inexpensive properties and genuinely nice people if you can deal with the summers. DC is a cesspool of stupidity filled with moronic politicians and busybody bureaucrats.

+1 yI would not want to live in Cali first and foremost. I also dont wanna live in Washington DC. I surely dont want to live in Illinois. New York ain't bad but expensive. And well the other one, lmao been there done that

Was Mississippi decent, when you were there? I think I know the answer, but why so down in Illinois? Some people actually rave about Chicago, despite its reputation, and I know other areas of Illinois are very racist, but that's everywhere

*on Illinois
- +1 y
Still in MS unfortunately. But the central and southern part of the state is very diverse. I can probably only think of 2 rude race related encounters i ever had. But north MS is another story. Students still put noose around the black statues neck as a fun tradition. Its fcked up. Im not too down on Illinois but the majority of the state seems dull and chicago seems dangerous like the MS capital.
+1 yI live in Canada. Tell me which one hates Arabs and blacks the most so I can avoid there.

@electromagnetic They all hate arabs and blacks equally. 😏

@KrakenAttackin well shit, I’ll stay up above the boarder.

@electromagnetic. Yeah, just ask @purplepoppy. About our roving bands of lynch mobs accidentally hanging tan white people.

+1 yZero percent of this website should have voted for Washington, D. C.
You're right OP, it's not a state, so why put it in a list of choices asking people to vote for the state they want to live in the least?
15 Reply- +1 y
Ok, I'll rephrase it, which location would you least want to live in?
- +1 y
I'm still picking Mississippi.
I really don't like it when people trash The South, and no other region, and trust me, there is a lot to like about the southeast, but out of every location listed, that's clearly the worst place to live. - +1 y
Aside from the low wages and not shit to do other than fish or go to waterprks and sports events, MS is not the worse out of the above. Every film makes Washington DC look like some eventual 9/11 target. Illinois will either bore you or get you killed. Cali is a bad weather target, political target and cult hole. And so on
- +1 y
@DizzyDesii As I stated above, it's hard to compare Washington, D. C. to states because D. C. is a city, and states are almost always much bigger than cities, and still function different than cities.
Mississippi has the highest homicide rate out of every state in the USA (at least as recent as 2021). Illinois is ranked number eight.
California may have some natural disasters, but other than that, the weather is generally beautiful almost all year around. All states are political targets, and all states have cults in them. - +1 y
But the issues in MS are likely from the Capital, jackson. The surrounding areas are not as bad

+1 yCalifornia is a nice place to visit but I don't want to live there... high cost of living, overcrowded cities and an extremely leftist liberal political climate.

+1 yMississippi is my answer. I wouldn't be well received down there.
24 Reply- +1 y
If you’re a poc then you will be well received and comfortable in central and south MS. The north is iffy. If you were referring to sexuality, then yea atlanta GA is prob best
- +1 y
@DizzyDesii yeah I was definitely referring to sexuality. Would not fly down there.

Lmao its a lot of gay people in MS. people are cordial but dont expect much support
- +1 y
What makes you think that?

I would generally never answer an Anonymous question but I had to answer this one. I don't agree with your answer as there are many great places to live in the south, but what I do love is your so true blib about Texas and those rabid creeps.
New York then California. I do f know how people are able to live next to so many other people. Seems super stressing. With high rises that block the sun. Hell no. Then this noise the smog. "I'm walkn here"

17 Reply- +1 y
HIGH POVERTY!!! Please enlighten us, which state doesn't have high poverty rates today?
- +1 y
@katiesmuff NH, MN, UT, CO, CT all have poverty rates HALF of MS's highest in the nation rate
- +1 y
Even half is high and it's getting worse across the country.
- +1 y
@katiesmuff US rate is 12%
MS is over 19% - +1 y
What is your point ASSHOLE! It's just a bloody shame that there is any poverty anywhere!
- +1 y
@katiesmuff my point is MS has far more poverty than average and the worse poverty rate in the country. There's been poverty since biblical times. Show me a country without it. Also, I enlightened you to what states don't have high poverty rates as you asked.
- +1 y
What is it about the poverty level that makes a place better or worse to live in? It's beautiful country, friendly people and mostly sincere people. It's also got very nice area's to live especially around the Gulf coast with great weather.
Bible Belt and Florida basically. I drive through there like a safari sometimes. Never stop. Thats when they get ya.

+1 yMississippi with that muggy heat in summer 🤢
11 Reply- +1 y
Its like a damn sauna lol. But its rare.
Its usually 60-90’degrees March through December. January and Feb drop to 20-40. I went to Vegas in 117 degree and it felt so cool and wet in comparison to MS’s 90 lol.
