Could you live on an Island?

Question

I am not talking about a big island like Hawaii where there are plenty of stores and restaurants and hospitals. A small island with maybe one grocery store and maybe a doctor. If you had an emergency you had to be shuttled to the mainland in the police boat. Tourism would be the biggest industry and it would have a total population of under 5000 people. The winters would be long and you would have to take a ferry boat to thet mainland for a lot of things.

However the ocean views are spectacular and the pace of life is slow. Everyone knows everyone else and they depend on each other for a lot of things,

Nah.

I love the beach, the sea breeze, the views, surfing, and sea food.

But living on a small island, I'd be concerned about hurricanes, typhoons or harsh weather events.

Mainly, I'm not fond of boating in the ocean. I tend to get sea sick when a boat starts rocking. And I wouldn't want to sink or get stranded if something happened to the boat. At least if your car breaks down, you don't sink. So I wouldn't want to be dependent on boats to get to civilization. And how would I get around once I did get to the mainland, rent a car?

I wouldn't mind living in a small community that had basic essentials. I kinda like that, actually. But I want to be able to jump in a car and drive if I want to. I want larger cities within driving distance.

If I had a nice house and sea plane (and knew how to fly), that small island could be idyllic. LOL. But I'd have to be really well off to afford that.

I could in an instant as long as it isn't too much more expensive than the mainland.

The quiet and slower pace of life sounds wonderful. It might be hard at first, adapting and getting a new living space. Having done that, I have an idea that I would host a neighborhood roast/cookout/gettogether, annually. The strong, close community is a strong draw.

No. I have always been a very active and social person. I enjoy some peace but not for long term.

I like to connect with people and enjoy foods from around the world. I also enjoy traveling, meeting people, understand people, their culture, costumes and history.

I also don’t like the cold. I can live with it…but if I have a choice…I would like to be in a place with good weather and good food.

I definitely could, I think that would be pretty close to my ideal kind of life. Especially if there was loads of wildlife to watch, the creatures are generally less afraid of people in places like that.

I think so, as long as I wasn’t super elderly. You’d want a nearby hospital for any medical events you might suffer. I probably couldn’t play hockey anymore though, so I’d want to be medium-old before the move.

My buddy is part of a trust that owns a property on Squam Lake up in New Hampshire. There are all these little islands, and some have a few homes on them. Some only have one solo house on them. That’s probably my dream. Isolated personal island property, but a short motorboat ride to shore and your car, and then just a few more minutes into town where the stores are.

No. I lived on Whidbey island in Washington state for 5 months and didn't care for that way of life at all.
Of course during the short time I lived there they had the biggest snow storm in 25 years. We were stuck in the house for a week, lost electricity.

I would not want to live there because there isn't a lot of options for somebody who likes to involve technology in their hobby schedule such as visiting a movie or an ice cream shop or an arcade or a restaurant. My main thing is, I like cultural variety and speedy internet, since I'm online most of the day, not only for conversation but also for learning and work.

Although Gilligans Island at times looked interesting, I just couldn't handle the sand flies. I couldn't do small island. I went to lake erie few times which gives that island feel. Don't like it... I like creature comforts and easy of access.

Moon ain't gonna work either...

Corsica or Sardinia, etc... have to explore it. I think my wife wouldn't like being away from food diversity.

I couldn't do that. For me it's not the being isolated from the outside world, it's dealing with the other people on the island. When you're in a community that small the only thing really that connects you is gossiping about the other neighbors. Most of the time gossip turns toxic. Personal experience from living in a small town, basically isolated from the "real world".

I have lived in much more secluded places than that. No doctor or grocery store. One place I lived in was only accessible by a 35 mile boat ride without a single retail building. That is unless you owned a personal helicopter that could land with out a pad.

No, I couldn't live in a place like that. I like big cities and having just one doctor around is something that I would be worried about.

I also hate winter and I don't like places where everyone knows everyone.
