Let an Oldster tell you the history:
Once upon a time, the state was alright. Well into the 1980's, the state was still predominantly Republican. The Commiecrat Left was back then offset by a Patriot Right.
This Patriot Right consisted of: (1) military personnel and their families, (2) aerospace and defense workers and their families, (3) computer hardware workers and their families.
What happened? The shift began in the 1990s, a great Irony Of The Cold War. US victory and Soviet defeat meant all of the aforementioned industries, and their voters, folded up in California. Meanwhile more lefty sectors of the state grew massively, such as: (1) media, (2) entertainment, (3) academia, (4) computer software (as opposed to hardware, it was not linked to defense or manufacturing, this is especially true for the Leftist scourge of social media)
Another Irony Of The Cold War was "Teh Ghey" voters, who tend to be Left, sometimes far Left. San Francisco, believe it or not, was once a military base town. The Presidio, Hunter's Point and Treasure Island Naval Shipyards, Fort Mason, Fort Funston and all that. Even neighboring Marin and Oakland had military facilities. All of which are now closed, and all those personnel, base workers, and their families scattered. During WW2, then Korea, then Vietnam, Homosexual servicemen were dishonorably discharged, shipped backed to Fort Mason or Hunter's Point, later flown back to SFO, and dropped off. Disgraced from their families given the times, they settled in, you guessed it, San Francisco, which was large enough to fade into the woodwork, but small enough for a critical mass of them to take political control. Which, by the late 1970's, they did. And from there it spread out.
Like that somewhat shrill lady sang, "Isn't it Ironic - don't you think?"
But certain nominal elements of the Right did not help either. The Greed heads of the Wall Street Journal were so enamored of having cheaper gardeners and maids, they pushed for massive immigration, often illegal. As early as 1994, some of us were warning about this human wave driving up already high housing costs, having a large underclass that would not integrate well into society, how an open border leads to cross-border crime and narcotic and human trafficking, and the shrinking of entry level positions that allowed people of modest means to advance into the middle class. But we were told to shut up and smeared if we persisted, and some Republicans, like the Bush dynasty and the late Jack Kemp, even deluded themselves into thinking that they would win what can only be called "A Hispandering Contest". The Wall Street Journal went about proving Vladimir Lenin correct: When the time comes to hang the capitalists, the Wall Street Journal will indeed have imported the underclass with which to do it.
And now, we have "Sunset In The Golden State":
https://www.locals.com/freedomain/search?q=sunset+in+the+golden+state&post=878370
So, is there any hope? Surprisingly, yes. It is turning out the underclass imported, along with the underclass already here, are not happy with "Teh Trans" agenda being pushed upon their children. And they are revolting. Perhaps the Far Left has overplayed its hand.
Moreover, 2010 was the FIRST census where California did not gain a congress (wo) man, and in the 202 Census, it actually LOST one. And this in spite of the Census counting aliens along with US Citizens. A more just census count would mean California losing four more at least.
2020 census, ugh typos
The Democrat administration in Sacramento and many of the cities. Rich latte-liberals in the big cities who continue voting Democrat.
High taxes; high costs; housing prices; oppressive laws.
Homelessness, filth and crime in big cities.
All because of Democrats and their policies. Gavin Newsom has been a disaster.
On the other hand, the Pacific Ocean can't be beat.
The weather is the best compared to almost anywhere in the world. There are wildfires in some places in the summer, but those happen all over the country. Mudslides only effect areas that are prone to them. I'll take the rare earthquake over annual tornadoes, hurricanes, ice and snow storms and humidity any day.
California's variety of topography and ecosystems are the best - the Pacific coast, mountains, deserts, forests, farmland, wine country. There are Spanish missions and beautiful, historic, touristy towns. There are many wonderful man-made attractions. And I love California's multiculturalism.
The only dangerous reptile is the rattlesnake, but they don't attack unless threatened.
There aren't many annoying bugs.
Outside of the big cities, much of California is rural and people aren't raving liberals. Even many middle-class suburban communities are really nice.
My wife and I bought 30 beautiful acres of oak grassland just below the snow line in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and built a house overlooking the central valley in 2002. It is surrounded by horse property, farms, ranches and wineries. We are a mile from a river and there are lakes and streams. We have all the necessities within 5 miles, small cities are 20 minutes away, and big cities are an hour away.
Our fixed mortgage is less than it would cost to rent an apartment these days.
We have zero danger from earthquakes or floods. Wildfires are our only concern, but our property is well protected and the fire response in our area is fantastic.
I've lived in California all my life and love it. I'll stick it out and work to oppose Democratic policies. I feel the same way about the USA. I'm not going to leave.
@Curmudgeon. Way closer to 80. Hwy 20.
Ah. Grass Valley, Nevada City and vicinity?
@Curmudgeon. Down the hill.
From what I hear the cost of living in California is very expensive, Certain political ideologies are also shoved down your throat.
I’ve also heard that many Californians are moving down to Texas, which from what I heard isn’t a good thing. Mind you, I’m from Canada so I don’t know a lot about American politics and stuff like that.
For the same reason that my state, Texas, and most states should deny citizenship and the right to vote within the state to people moving from California into their state. Those strange people may leave to get away from California but they radical socialism voting habits with them.

High taxes, high property values, liberals, awful traffic, illegal aliens, mudslides, forest fires and Gavin Newsome.
In a nutshell, California sucks because of liberal politics.
To be clear, the 'place' doesn't suck. I miss the climate, the ocean, the beaches, the mountains, the deserts, all of that. What sucks is the people. There are WAY too many of them, and way too many who have supported the insane liberal agenda there, which has dragged California society down into the toilet. The liberal social policies, the high taxes, the oppressive regulatory climate, the homelessness EVERYWHERE... all because of liberal politics.
I work for an employer in another state now, and I do a lot of hiring. I hire people from many different states because my team works remotely, so it doesn't matter where they live. I have teammates in 12 different states. But my employer has banned the hiring of Californians. It's a shame because I know some really good people in California who would be great candidates, but my employer can't afford to hire them because of the of the bullshit laws there.
I grew up in California but had to leave 8 years ago because I couldn't stand it anymore. I still have family there (who desperately want to leave, but can't for various reasons) and I visit one or twice a year. When I do I always enjoy the place, but not most of the people. It is truly paradise lost. Heartbreaking.
Do tell us more because those policies are spreading. My state follows california blindly. Whats ao bad about liberal policies? Make a video?
@lightbulb27 Seriously? Or are you being sarcastic?
For me it’s letting criminals run amuck with impunity while treating law abiding citizens like criminals. If you don’t let squatters take your home, you’re a criminal. If you don’t give thugs your money and your vehicle on demand, you’re a criminal. If you try to stop criminals from ripping off your business, you’re a criminal. If you help defend a victim of violent crime, you’re a criminal. The radical left will not be satisfied until the streets run red with the blood of innocents. That way everyone will vote to give government MORE power and the real tyranny begins.
This is absolutely the end game for them.
As everyone else has already said, California sucks because of democrats. It's a beautiful place that has been ruined by democrats like Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris, among many others, and of course the ignorant people who voted for them.
I meant to mention I have lived in California all my life. I plan to leave as soon as I'm financially able to.
Just pray that Newsome doesn't run for President of the whole country will be like California.
Agreed
Where want to move? Amazing its that bad.
@lightbulb27 I don't know where I want to go yet, but right now I feel like almost anywhere would be better than California. I'll graduate from college next spring and I guess I'll see where I can get a job. I won't be able to afford to buy a house in California, probably ever, so I'll have to go elsewhere if I even want to not just pay huge rent for an apartment. I still live with my parents, who thankfully own their home, but they desperately want to get out of the state too. I might end up following them but I don't know yet.
My family and I can't even feel safe walking in our neighborhood because of all the homeless people, tents, shelters, drug dealers, pee and feces on the sidewalk. It's such a beautiful place that has been turned into a gross prison for my family. Our cars have been broken into six times in the last two years, and the cops don't do anything about it, or anything to stop it.
My dad says his company is considering relocating to Texas or Utah because they can't afford to continue operating in California. The taxes and red tape they have to deal with make it almost impossible to be profitable. I hope they leave and we move someplace better. Either Texas or Utah sound amazing right now.
Too many weird people. Been there, met weird people… very crowded, and left.
I met some strong christians trying to help others but in essence id say… a decline in morals and values.
Hollywood… satan wood?
Evil spirits?
Divide into 3 states?
That second band completely ruined that song. I get it's a parody, but they could have at least stuck with the original melody.
Californication would be another good one to spoof.
I personally like this one. Someone made it 12 years ago, but it hasn't aged well at all, aside from us having an additional homeless crisis now. I can't believe this video is still up😂
Really it has only sucked since it changed from Republican to Democrat leadership, they've destroyed what was once a beautiful state.
I haven't been to California in years but I spent my youth there. I watched it go from clean respectable to dirty and crime ridden. I loved the beaches but now they are unsafe and a dirty mess.
Do you live in California?
Have you ever been to California?
Why do you think that it sucks?
Yes, I live in Orange County, Calif. High prices on everything, especially housing. A starter home could set you back $1 million. Then there is the smog, traffic, illegals, Newsome as Governor - shall I say more? The minimum wage was raised to $20, and now many businesses have fled to Texas. He now wants to raise it another 3.8 % on top of that. He's nuts!
I am a native Californian. I have lived in the South Eastern part of the U. S., and yes, it's beautiful there and if you are wealthy and don't need to work, you can live there.
Unfortunately when I lived there for 13 years, I had one terrific job for 7 years. The rest of the time I was unemployed and had to start all over with minimum wage jobs that depressed me to work there.
Then I moved near Seattle for about 5 months and hated it there!
So, I came back to California where my family was.
And I don't have any desire to move again.
Every State has things wrong with it. And the 18+ illegal aliens aren't just in California.
And crime is everywhere. High rent seems to be everywhere and if your rent is lower, then your electric bill makes up for any savings for low rent. The cost of food and electric bills were just as much in the deep south and I was sticker shocked when I got there.
Florida has snakes everywhere! Among other pesty things crawling around.
Need I go on?
California has beautiful weather, beautiful beaches, lots of things to do and places to go to.
It's not all bad.
@Bricelean
Good to know. 🙂 It has a lot of good things about it, but I just wish more people were a little nicer.
On the other hand, I went shopping the other day and a nice man opened the door for me then at another store a nice woman held the door open for men. Of course I thanked them and told them they are very kind.
The same day I was short $4 at the checkout and the lady behind me paid the $4 for me. How sweet was that? I thanked her so much I think I embarrassed her. I promised her that I would pay it forward when he opportunity arises.
So, that was a pretty good day!
I might add, that with so many people calling people racist, on that day, the two women that were nice to me were women of color and I am white.
No racism that day! So, it isn't everywhere.
It’s been ALLOWED to be taken over by the circus by the good people who did nothing. Too bad because it is a beautiful state
Glad I went there when I was 16, near 60 years ago before a lib-wokes totally wrecked it.
Great clips, by the way. Thanks!
let's trade Daniela...
how much do you like the idea of living in Austin, Texas?
Just like New York is too damn expensive specifically L. A. San Francisco and San Diego.
High prices, laws , policies and lots of natural disasters I guess, been awhile since I’ve been there
Love these parodies.
I love California. What's not to like?
@Bricealan It is just the political situation. Otherwise, the place is amazing, climate and terrain wise. And remarkably bug free. I can have a conversation with a neighbor at one of our respective front doorsteps, for 20 minutes or more, and not one insect will fly into my or their house. Try that anywhere else in the nation, or most of the world.
Leftist leadership and ruinous taxation.
Cali sux? News to this NYC boy!
True. If you are going to live in a state ruined by Leftists, crime and ocertaxation for the services received, why not come here and live in the one with the nicer weather of the two places?
Overtaxation, ugh typo
Homeless drug addicts and Democrats
California girls
Progressivism.
It’s just expensive
Gavin Newsom.
Democrats….. that’s why
