No, it’s better to go with protection , just to be safe , going without a weapon is dumb period , you never know what is lurking in the woods. So I feel safer knowing I have protection on me just in case something crazy happens. Not only do you have to worry about wild animals , you should worry about asshole people as well. Thankfully I never had to pull my gun on anything or anyone , but I feel safer having it with me.

I have, many times. The Lower Peninsula of Michigan doesn't have many bears or cougars or the like. Upper Peninsula is another story. While I have done it there too, last time we did, my wife didn't sleep well. So now I take a firearm and call it her "sleeping pill". Even though the island we camp on up there has bears, wolves and coyotes confirmed, and cougars (rumored/disputed) none of them ever molested our campsite. Coyotes have gotten the closest, but they run away if you yell at them.

I always bring a knife camping, but as a tool, not a weapon.

I've been camping many dozens of times and even gone on several two week backpacking trips through the wilderness. I never needed a weapon.

Yeah, depends on where. The only thing that really concerns me is grizzlies, I just back from 2 weeks in heavy bear country and we were hunting so obviously had guns we weren’t sleeping with them. As long as you’re aware of where you are and what you’re doing you can avoid most risky situations

Hundreds of times. I don't know if I have ever had a weapon when I camped, but it's possible. I've even camped without a weapon when I knew there were grizzlies in the area.

The same way I've driven without a seatbelt a bunch of times. Sure, but I know it's a pointless risk, even when the odds are small of needing the weapon/seatbelt.
