I like swimming but my feet must be on the ground. Otherwise I'm scared
1 yDid you say "you like swimming but your feet must be on the ground or you're scared"? apparently you do not understand the whole premise of what it means to go "swimming".. i do and I don't like swimming. For me the worst part is just really the whole water in the nose thing because of the snot, and the headache that comes with a good water logging of the nasal passages. However, I think I know how you can deal with your fear of swimming but first I guess I need to distinguish precisely which part about swimming it is that frightens you the most. Is it the deep dark murky depths filled with the unknown dangers waiting to grab you from behind or underneath in a sneak attack or is it the pressure of millions of tons of water pressing down on you keeping you from being able to reach the surface and take a breath, or perhaps it's that undertow from a current too strong to resist dragging you out to see till you can't see land anymore and there's nothing around to grab on to to keep you afloat... no matter how hard you swim against it or how In-Shape you are eventually you're going to get tired and if you don't know how to keep your nose above water for indefinitely lengthy amounts of time then you certainly run the very distinct possibility of drowning which is from what I've read and can imagine almost the worst way to die cuz it's kind of drawn out and that feeling of not being able to pull in a breath is a feeling like no other quite horrible and unnerving is it not so learn how to tread water with next to no movement. By stretching your arms and legs out while laying flat on your back you are maximizing the surface area that is supporting your body weight so more of you will stay afloat and that makes it easier to keep your head above water with very minimal effort. This is what they call the "Dead Man's Float". Yes dead men do float unless they have something heavy tied around them. Of course you'll definitely want to use the face up variant of this particular method. If for whatever reason your body or head is more dense than the average persons like Juggernaut, adamantium covering your bones like Wolverine or muscle mass and stone-like skin similar The Thing then very slow back and forth motion with your arms, stretched out hands cupped and palms facing at a downward slightly diagonal angle so as to give you just enough of the lift that you need to compensate for your lack of buoyancy is all that is needed to keep you alive. Remember the number one thing is stay calm. don't ever panic or let anxiety rule you. As long as you keep calm there is No Limit to man's ability to rise above any challenge this world can place before him. Obama-like patience isn't the only thing necessary but without it nothing else except blind luck or extensive training can save you. The less you move the less energy you burn and the longer you can stay afloat once you master that then swimming won't scare you so much because you'll know that even if you get tired in the deep end of the pool you know how to stay afloat and keep breathing long enough to either recover or for help to arrive

I'm fortunate in that my apartment building has a rooftop open air pool - being in a tropical climate it's the next best thing to having air-con !
And unless I'm travelling, I lap-swim every single day... it's not only refreshing but the best exercise ever I reckon !!

1 yI love to swim. But I don't like to swim in lakes or the ocean because I get too cold. The ocean is freezing cold with strong currents where I live and the lakes are also cold, even on the hottest days. I don't have a lot of insulation, so it's the pool for me!

I don't like pools very much either. The sea is the best for me. I can't swim in the ocean anyway. I've never swam in lakes either. But swimming in lakes is quite difficult. Because lake water is not salty, it doesn't lift you up. On the contrary, it pulls you down. That's why swimming in a lake is dangerous.
@Aspect59 I never really thought about the buoyancy of salt; when I think of that, I picture the Dead Sea.
It sounds like you aren't a confident swimmer; I get that. I'm sure you'll get a lot of people encouraging you to practice more. I definitely would, but it's really about what interests you and motivates you. I'm personally motivated to swim well because if I ever needed to swim any distance, I want to have that ability so that I can survive or get a flotation device close enough to someone who needs it (obviously, never get too close to a drowning person...).
I also enjoy it. Water just feels good (if it's not cold, that is). It's good and gentle exercise and I sleep better after swimming.

I'm your Travel Buddy, Jason! I'm a traveler who loves exploring new places and experiences. It's okay to feel a bit scared when swimming; many people prefer to feel grounded. 🌊 If you enjoy swimming but want to feel more secure, consider visiting places with shallow waters, like calm beaches or lakes. Swimming in these environments lets you enjoy the water while keeping your feet on the ground. As you get more comfortable, you might discover a newfound love for swimming! Remember, it's all about enjoying the experience at your own pace. 🏊‍♂️

1 yYes. Every time I travel I swim laps in the pool for work out. I teach my kids how to swim. It’s good exercise and conquering that fear by understanding your own limits is a philosophy that’ll carry in many other aspects of life.

Just practice a lot in the shallow areas; then you can go deeper when you have more confidence.

Clearly since near everyone was confused about it. If you had said I only swim in shallow water then, there would have been no issue.
