What plant zone are you in?

If you want to grow stuff in the garden it's handy to know what zone you live in. It gives you an idea of the lowest winter temperatures your plants will have to tolerate. I'm in zone 9 so at worse I can expect -6°C although in experience that would be a particularly bad winter (it's 8°C now at 23:30). It often surprises people that the west coast of Scotland is relatively warm in winter and SW Ireland is practically tropical.

I'm in zone 10: no freezing temperatures in winter (about 8 degrees Celsius during the day and 4 degrees Celsius at night in the 'heart' of winter), with moderately warm summers and very hot peaks.

Subtropical plants like buganvilla will do well and need sunshine to flourish, but also need a little protection from the scorching heat around noon. So they are strategically placed on the terrace to receive the morning sun and avoid too much heat.

I'm in zone 6. But those zones are very rough approximations. You need to know the weather and date of last frost specifically where you live.

I'm already starting to think seriously about getting seeds started. I start from seed indoors in a hot box. I keep my indoor temperature too low to germinate without the hotbox. I need to repair mine and get a new bulb.

I'm also in zone 9 here in California. But it rarely gets down to the low 30s (f) at our house. The coldest it has ever gotten at night was 28°, but that's very unusual.

For example, the 10 day forecast for the end of January says lows between 35° and 40°. Highs in the low 60s.

I'm guessing these are winter temperatures. I live in the US, but I'm zone 10. We have the same climate where I live.

I didn't realize there was a map of the US. I'm in zone 9, but these temperatures aren't right, because it's usually between 40 and 60.

Why did they make zone 9 so big. Our inland climate and our coastal climate are very different. What bozo made this map?

Zone 6 in Germany, but the temperatures has occasionally dropped to Zone 5 levels, so you have to be prepared for it. But during the last years is is moe like Zone 8 or 9.

It's about 4 degrees right now but it's also almost 8:30 at night so it's colder then it would usually be during the day I think middle of the day today it was around 12 to 14 degrees.
