I lived half a block from the beach for a year, and went surfing almost daily during the warm month's. The problem was that it was a little beach town and you couldn't get a job there unless you grew up there and knew everyone. I went into debt living there, but it was nice at the time.

Nope. Live in the middle of a city. Sometimes I visit the beach, but I live in Hurricane Alley. Living close to the beach is not a great idea near the Gulf Coast.
