Do you live near the ocean?

I live about 5 or 6 miles away. When there is an onshore wind I can smell it.

I did for the first 46 years of my life. Mostly I was within 5 miles, but sometimes I lived much closer. And for about a year, I lived in an idyllic spot on the Palos Verdes Peninsula with a glorious view of the ocean and Catalina Island. I was within a couple short blocks of Point Fermin.

And I agree, the almost constant off-shore breeze from the Pacific Ocean was practically medicinal. It's the thing I miss the most about where I live now.

Why did you move?

@DubiousIntentions. My wife and I wanted to buy a house. I wanted enough room to have some raised beds, grow veggies, maybe some fruit trees and even chickens.
The only houses in SoCal that were in our price range were small,1950s era, three bedroom, one and half bathroom houses on postage stamp lots for around $350k.

We scouted out northern California and I put in for a transfer. We wound up finding 30 oak-covered acres with a gorgeous view for $80k total. We built our house on the side of hill, put in a well, water storage tank, septic system, grid-tied solar voltaic system, propane tank and 2 1/2 car, two story steel garage. Now we have a small orchard and lots of herbs and veggies.
We had 5 chickens for a while, but bobcat got them. Our next door neighbor has lots of chickens and other fowl for pets, though, and she gives us eggs.

Some parts of California are financially manageable, but Orange County is not one of them.

@DubiousIntentions. Yeah. I was in the south bay of L. A. county. You're right, Orange County and other parts of SoCal weren't happening. And I didn't want to live in the desert.
I love where I live now but I do miss the ocean.

Nope, I have never lived near the ocean. I live near Lake Ontario, but it's freshwater and definitely not at the calibre of an ocean. I'd have to buy a plane ticket or drive for a long, long time to be able to reach the Atlantic.

The great lakes are like a sea. They have storms and sink ships, just like in the ocean.

I am about 2 hours from Virginia Beach, Virginia. We rarely go down there because it's not a place you want to be after dark.

Sadly not.

However in some small way the disappointment is made up by the fact that we live on the outskirts of a beautiful "chocolate box top" village with a stream running through it.

At work it's about 100 meters from my office - enough to avoid high tide.

Well I live near a bay - maybe 2Km. It is a large bay but not ocean sized. Can smell it.

Yeah a few miles away West LA got one and if I go down further I'll see abucha ocean down South LA and LB and abuncha other areas lol
