Scotland is encouraging tourists to display green T plates on their cars after a series of fatal accidents caused by people driving on the wrong side of the road or being unfamiliar with local roads?
Now living in a tourist area I kind of get it, we've all been stuck behind a French driver doing half the speed limit or been cut up by a German using the wrong lane at a roundabout, not to mention the English who think touring a caravan gives them right of way.
But would T plates stop driving on the wrong side? Would T plates set you up as a target for criminals? Or make the police keep an eye on you knowing you're likely to break a driving law? Why is a tourist any different to a native who's unfamiliar with that particular road?
At the moment they're just "suggested" but do you think they should be law?
I think this is a damned fine idea cause I have been that tourist trying to acclimatize to driving on the right hand side in North America. At least it alerts other drivers you might do something weirdly left handed.
But I think it should be extended to pedestrians too. Maybe it is orderly in the UK but we have a lot of Asians. I don't have anything against our fine yellow brethren BUT they do walk on the wrong side of the street/pavement. You have one half walking on the left and the other half on the right during peak cafe time.
It is utter chaos. Foot traffic snarls up. People bump into you when you are on the correct side. I was bumped into a couples street table one time. I think T plates on pedestrians would be good to warn you they are likely to veer onto your side in front of you.
I was going to rant about women in super markets but it'll get too long if I do. So I'll keep that denouncement for later.
In our case pedestrians should keep to the left - same as cars. I guess in US it should be on the right. Scouts mucked it up by teaching scouts to walk in the opposite direction to cars on your side of the road i. e the opposite to everybody else, the same as with handshakes.
It is important because if you have a busy pedestrian street with people going in both directions it flows much better if people keep on one side of the sidewalk. It really doesn't matter if it is left or right so long as everybody conforms.
Particularly with people walking and talking on their phone. I was on the correct side and saw this Sumo like guy walking towards me. I politely stopped so he could go around me but because he was walking and talking on his phone he never noticed me and shirt fronted me onto a street table.
Girls are a problem because they are apt to walk on the shop side regardless of direction.

😂 I was taught that boyscout thing too, because it's supposed to be safer as you can see oncoming cars. Bicyclists were doing that too, then stopped. Im lucky that in my country sidewalks are common and wide
As suggested, it would make an easy target for robbery and assault. It wouldn't surprise me if people opened car boots in a hotel parking, for instance, and target cars with a T plate. Approach them at a petrol station. Or yell at them at an intersection to get out of their *** way.

Maybe tourist just shouldn't be allowed to drive in other countries. I've never driven outside UK. To be honest I'm too worried aboyt how confusing it will be an ill make mistakes. So it is dangerous really. I think maybe a tourist needs to take a few lessons and pass a test to be allowed to drive even if a rental car.

That doesn’t work in Miami because the ghetto people rob people like that they are very vulnerable the tourist that come to Miami. The ghetto people from the hood used to go after people with license plates saying lease that means it’s a Rent-A-Car and that means you’re most likely a tourist and they used to go after them and rob them so they had to take that off the license plate. "Would T plates set you up as a target for criminals?" Many years ago, in Florida, there was a distinct designation on license plates for rental vehicles. This had the effect to identifying tourists and others who were unfamiliar with the local area. Criminals targeted the occupants of the rental cars and we eventually eliminated the rental car redesignation on license plates.
I think tourist drivers already have foreign plates so they're unnecessary, unless they're driving a hire car, and they then could be useful.
The exception to this rule would be if a country is well known for being bad drivers. For example in Wales no one is trusted to go over 20mph, they obviously are a people with very slow reactions. So if they had a sign saying from Wales, everyone would keep out of their way.
How about convicted criminals having a letter "C" on their car. There are car crashes that are planned on the unaware, and I'm sure everyone would feel safer knowing who the criminals were.
Option A - Make American tourists use Uber or trains only, by law.
Option B - The UK starts driving on the right side of the road like every other civilized country. And move the damned steering wheel to the correct side of the Vauxhall.
None of the above. I think if anything, it would make locals aware that this individual may pose a danger on the roads.
It's actually not a bad idea, but I can mainly see it working with RENTAL CARS. Well, I guess someone bringing their own car wouldn't need one, becauase you'd know from their license plate.
I don’t understand why you would want to drive in a region with very different traffic laws and customs in the first place. I’m definitely getting me one of those rickshaw kids when i visit. Mush, street urchin! Mush!
