Is your town almost famous for anything?

This question was inspired by @purplepoppy who asked, Ever saw a sign and wondered if there was a story behind it?

The "Katie's Crotch Road" sign isn't in our town but it's in our county and prolly about as close to famous as we'll ever get.

The story between us localz is, back in the horse and carriage days, that's where the road crotched between 2 different towns and was the halfway overnight stop since it was a long ways to anywhere. So there was a hotel there. Owned by a kind and generous woman named Katie. She generously offered overnite services to the weary travelers. So they named the road after her in honorary tribute.

So, anyways, it got us almost famous on the internet for a little while a few years ago:

As an Update Embden did grow confident in who they are and Katies Crotch does live on. The Road Sign name remains the same. And still gets stolen. And there might be one in our house in honorary tribute of Katie and remembrance of our 15 minutes of almost fame.

And we even got mentioned by almost famous, stand up comedian Juston McKinney!

And so, I ask, Is your town almost famous for anything?

If you hit the serious history books you'll mostly find stuff such as Fishguard being the last location of an invasion on mainland Britain (1797), there's quite a bit about Henry VII at Pembroke and how the French landed in Milford to help us kick the crap out of the English. Milford was actually given to American families after the war of independence. There's a lot of military and religious history in the local area.

But there's the light hearted stuff too.

Tenby gave the world the equal = sign.

Pembroke Dock built the Millennium Falcon for Star Wars then smashed it up for firewood.

Local murderer John Cooper was caught after being recognised on a game show (bullseye).

In 1977 we became famous for UFOs after aliens landed. people still come here hoping for a sighting. (Absolutely nothing to do with some guys from the oil refinery playing a joke)

One of our local castles is haunted by a monkey.

Well not famous but there is a town in the USA that carries my family name. And yes I'm actually a descendant of the people who settled that area and founded that town about 250 years ago. Sorta cool piece of family history but not exactly fame. I have somehow inherited a bunch of stuff that documents my family going back to 1749 in the Colonies before they became the USA. Hand written letters, the family bible, a quilt with the date it was made embroidered into it, some printed articles from the 1800's, children's school slates and books, tools.

Yes my city is called the biggest little city in the world

It used to be that way but it has grown quite a bit it's exactly like Vegas except for smaller and we're 4800 ft from sea level and Vegas is on sea level so it stays cooler here there's pine trees and mountains everywhere and Vegas is just in the desert but then you have brothels 24-hour gambling clubbing drinking

And of course if you live here you don't do any of that stuff because you realize it's a big tourist trap to make money and it's in their favor

But if friends do come in town you will go out and experience some fun with them

The town i live in now is famous for an airplane crashing into the local mall.
I used to live in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Which is famous for its strange name.
I also used to live in “Cereal City”. Battle Creek breaks its own record for “the world’s longest breakfast table” every year. 😂😂😂 This because it is home of the three largest cereal companies.
I was born in a suburb of Detroit, which is known worldwide as “Motor City” because it’s home to the “Big Three” US automakers. It also earned recognition as “Motown” for its contribution to the popular rhythm and blues music industry. Unironically, “Motown” is just another expression of “Motor City”. Mo (tor) Town… but it rolled off the tongue better for the hip kats.

Sort of. Henry Mancini and Mia Farrow used to live on the hill above me, about 9 or 10 blocks away and, over the past 40 years, we seem to have become the Hollywood of the east! LOTS of movies have been made here!! My ex-fiance was even in one for a few seconds. Cyril Wecht used to live here (until very recently) and mom was friends with his son. Oh! And, I'm from here!! (-:
Remember that song, "Play That Funky Music, White Boy"? The drummer used to live 2 miles from here and my nephew dated his niece and I used to hang out with his cousin who lived across the street from me.

History NC Historic Sites  A boy found a very large gold nugget in a creek behind my house. Its like a legend around here.  Also we had a very very large moonshine bust that I hear stories about. But I can't find you a link for those stories

My highschool got featured on the no spin zone with Bill oriely (or however you spell it) for a sexting scandal. It's on YouTube.

I'm pretty sure we had been featured on there before because the way he called our school degenerate made it sound like he knew it well 😂

My area I grew up in is home to multiple people who made names for themselves in professional sports including a girl around my age who competed in the olympics.

There's also a well known golf course here which we used to go to late at night when nobody's parents had a place to hang out but it was too late to go home. We'd sneak onto the course and drink the beers in the coolers 😂

Honestly the most famous thing in my area is probably traffic.

Oh that's actually interesting. My city is known for having one of the lowest crime rates in India but it isn't famous for it because we're known as 'India's best kept secret'.

Well, sort of, I guess. I live in Los Angeles, which contains Hollywood. In Hollywood, we used to make movies, but now we make them in Burbank, which is really near to Hollywood. I have Sunset Boulevard and Malibu and a pretty cool beach.
